From the Naugatuk Daily News and the Hartford Courant:

The Fourth of July sensation in West Granby was of the most unexpected kind in 1900. It was a double tragedy which resulted in the death of one person and the imprisonment of another.

Joseph Bolio, a Frenchman, son of Benjamin Bolio and Rosa Devnew, was born in Pittsfield, MA, about May 1874, and came to West Granby from Westfield about 1897. He had worked as a blacksmith in Fred Parmelee's shop, living at Mr. Parmelee's house.

Anice was living with her widowed mother not far away and had worked out. For some time she had been employed at Alfred L. Hayes's hotel and had always given good satisfaction. She had been married to Wallace Buttles of Tariffville but was divorced about 1898.

Mr. Bolio had been attentive to Ms. Holcombe and they had made plans to go to the races in West Granby that afternoon. Bolio had apparently gone to the barn at the Parmelee house to feed the horses at 1:30 and Anice accompanied him.

It was rumored that Anice was jealous because Bolio was going to take another girl to the picnic and because she had wanted him to marry her for some time but he had refused to set the date and they had quarreled about this time. Three shots were heard not more than 5 minutes after they left the house.

Anice returned to the house saying Joe had shot her; there was a bullet hole in her head.

Bolio was found lying near the barn with a bullet through his head and the pistol not far from him. His case was pronounced practically hopeless from the first. Dr. R. B. Chatfield was hastily summoned by the Parmelee family and he telephoned for Dr. C. M. Wooster; Dr. Alfred J. Weed, the medical examiner, was also summoned. Bolio was in convulsions and unable to speak. He continued to be in great agony, though unable to speak, and died a little after 4 o'clock without regaining consciousness.

A later autopsy by Dr. W. W. Knight and Dr. Weed found there were two wounds in his head. One ball entered the left side just above the ear and penetrated the brain in a horizontal direction, deflecting a very little to the rear and lodging on the inside of the skull on the right side. The other entered the right side and tore down through the face, smashing the jaw.

Anice's wound is back of the right ear. The ball passed on down to the cheek bone, where it was extracted by Dr. Chatfield after he had given her ether. She rallied well, but was then still unable to give any account of the shooting.

After Dr. Weed had examined the wounds and had learned the circumstances he thought there was a serious question as to whether Anice might not have done the shooting. It did not look as though Bolio fired the shot into the left side of his head, which caused his death. Bolio was right handed and to have inflicted the wound he must have fired from an almost impossible position. It was finally concluded that Anice should be held till Coroner Taintor could come from Hartford and investigate. Constable Fred Griffin placed her under arrest. She was still at the Parmelee home, unable to endure being moved.

By the next day, Thursday, Anice was not such that Coroner Taintor of Hartford was able to hold an inquest over the remains of Bolio. His parents arrived from Westfield. No time was set for the funeral as it was still possible to hold the inquest before the burial.

Coroner Taintor spent some time Thursday taking evidence and examining several witnesses. None of them saw the shooting. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for Monday or Tuesday of the following week, Justice Jewett presiding. William C. Case was engaged to defend Miss Holcombe.
