     Lewis Offensend was born in 1805 at CT.¹ He was the son of Matthias Offensend and Polly (?)¹ Lewis Offensend married Wealthy Holcombe, daughter of Asa Holcombe and Lucinda Miller, in 1825.¹ Lewis Offensend died on 8 November 1859 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹

     Amos Offensend was born on 4 January 1827 at NY.¹ He was the son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Amos Offensend married Katherine Davenport, daughter of Solomon Davenport and Nancy Vanorder, on 24 December 1857.¹ Amos Offensend died on 5 May 1878 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA, at age 51.¹

Amos and Catherine were enumerated in the 1860 Beaver, Crawford Co., PA, federal census. He was a farmer, age 34, she was 23. The only child in the household was Charles, 1.

     Katherine Davenport was born on 8 July 1837 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Solomon Davenport and Nancy Vanorder.¹ Katherine Davenport married Amos Offensend, son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe, on 24 December 1857.¹ Katherine Davenport died on 1 November 1932 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA, at age 95.¹

     Polly Ann Offensend was born on 14 September 1828 at NY.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Polly Ann Offensend married David Austin Warner, son of Austin Warner and Alethea (?), in 1848 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ Polly Ann Offensend died on 25 July 1912 at near Warrens, WI, at age 83.¹

     David Austin Warner was born on 30 July 1818 at NY.¹ He was the son of Austin Warner and Alethea (?)¹ David Austin Warner married Polly Ann Offensend, daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe, in 1848 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ David Austin Warner died on 4 June 1874 at Pine River, Waushara Co., WI, at age 55.¹

     Asa Offensend was born on 7 April 1830 at VT.¹ He was the son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Asa Offensend married Elizabeth McGuire, daughter of Francis McGuire and Mary Fetterman, on 11 September 1852.¹ Asa Offensend died on 4 February 1911 at Akron, Summit Co., OH, at age 80.¹ He was buried at Akron, Summit Co., OH.²

Asa was a boatman on the old Erie Extension Canal. When the "old ditch" was abandoned he went with many of his townsmen to Akron, Ohio, to continue his vocation on the Ohio Canal. ³

Asa and Elizabeth were enumerated in the 1860 Summerhill, Crawford Co., PA, federal census. He was a farmer, age 29, she was 28. Children in the household were Frank 4, and Ida 1. Mother Weltha, 52, was also enumerated in the household.

     Elizabeth McGuire was born on 13 July 1832 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Francis McGuire and Mary Fetterman.¹ Elizabeth McGuire married Asa Offensend, son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe, on 11 September 1852.¹ Elizabeth McGuire died on 25 March 1922 at Conneaut, Ashtabula Co., OH, at age 89.¹ She was buried at Akron, Summit Co., OH.²

     Phylura Offensend was born on 11 September 1831 at VT.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Phylura Offensend married James Nelson Gill on 27 September 1851.¹ Phylura Offensend died on 1 January 1903 at Edgar, Clay Co., NE, at age 71.¹

James and Phylura married in Pennsylvania, but moved to Wisconsin, where they lived until 1878 when they moved to Nebraska. Here they made their home in Edgar but James died just two months after their arrival. Phylura and her two sons were left alone among strangers but she remained here the rest of her life. It was said of her, "Her faith in God and her untiring service in her Church, the Presbyterian, sustained her. All her life was spent in the service of the Master, and she was always found ready and willing to do His bidding. -- When her health would permit she was always to be found in the Sanctuary of the Lord.

She was a woman of more than ordinary ability, an active worker in the Temperance cause, and at one time County Superintendent of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was a woman beloved by all who knew her. Her strong moral character, her earnest faith and naturally kind disposition made a beautiful life which all will do well to emulate. She was a perfect Christian mother, only loving her children less than her Maker, and may they look to their mother's God for comfort and consolation in this hour of great sorrow.²"

     James Nelson Gill was born on 31 March 1830 at NY.¹ He married Phylura Offensend, daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe, on 27 September 1851.¹ James Nelson Gill died on 14 September 1878 at Edgar, Clay Co., NE, at age 48.¹

     Adelia Offensend was born on 11 January 1834 at VT.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Adelia Offensend died on 23 April 1911 at age 77.¹

     Wealthanna Offensend was born on 28 March 1836 at VT.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Wealthanna Offensend married Jacob Juttin, son of Jacob Juttin and (?) Spicer.¹ Wealthanna Offensend died on 13 October 1912 at Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI, at age 76.¹

from an Oshkosh Wisconsin, newspaper, concerning their golden wedding, about 1906:

". . . Jacob and Wealthanna are among the old and respected residents of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. They reside at 45 Pleasant Avenue and that has been the site of their home during all their married life. Mr. Juttin is seventy six yeas of age and his loyal consort is seventy. During the evening about two hundred friends of the worthy couple called to tender their congratulations and regards and to wish them many more years of happy wedded life. . . . Mr. and Mrs. Juttin in addition to congratulations, were made the recipients of more substantial tokens of regard in the shape of china and silverware gold money pieces and other gifts. Among the presents was a handsome easy rocking chair, which was presented by members of Winnebago Lodge No. 120 Independent order of Odd Fellows, with which Mr. Juttin has been affiliated for more than half a century . . ." ²

     Jacob Juttin was born in 1828 at England.¹ He was the son of Jacob Juttin and (?) Spicer.¹ Jacob Juttin married Wealthanna Offensend, daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Jacob Juttin died on 24 November 1909 at Oshkosh, Winnebago Co., WI.¹

     Caroline Offensend was born on 27 February 1838 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Caroline Offensend died on 3 April 1906 at Ashtabula, OH, at age 68.¹

Orlando and Caroline were enumerated in the 1880 Conneaut, Crawford Co., PA, federal census, page 71B. He was 44, she was 41. William, age 21, was living at home.

     Lewis Offensend was born on 21 July 1841 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Lewis Offensend married Helen M. Chapman on 29 September 1870 at Springboro, Crawford Co., PA.¹ Lewis Offensend died on 13 March 1917 at Linesville, Crawford Co., PA, at age 75.¹

     Helen M. Chapman was born on 9 August 1846 at Springboro, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She married Lewis Offensend, son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe, on 29 September 1870 at Springboro, Crawford Co., PA.¹ Helen M. Chapman died on 30 March 1905 at Greenville, Mercer Co., PA, at age 58.¹

     Emma Jane Offensend was born on 9 May 1844 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Emma Jane Offensend died on 11 January 1906 at age 61.¹

     John Olvin Offensend was born on 24 January 1850 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ John Olvin Offensend married Charlotte Stewart.¹ John Olvin Offensend died on 9 August 1921 at age 71.¹

     Charlotte Stewart was born on 1 October 1853 at Freeport, Armstrong Co., PA.¹ She married John Olvin Offensend, son of Lewis Offensend and Wealthy Holcombe.¹ Charlotte Stewart died on 6 August 1935 at Sharon, Mercer Co., PA, at age 81.¹

     Charles Offensend was born on 15 September 1858 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport.¹ Charles Offensend died in October 1881 at age 23.¹

     Solomon Davenport Offensend was born on 23 June 1860 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport.¹ Solomon Davenport Offensend married Dora Ellen Thomas, daughter of John Thomas and Julia Phelps, on 19 November 1883.¹ Solomon Davenport Offensend died on 5 November 1925 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA, at age 65.¹

Solomon and Dora were enumerated in the 1920 Summerhill, Crawford Co., PA, federal census, ED 43, page 7A. He was a dairy farmer, age 59, she was 58. Children in the household were Amos 25, and Lee 23.

     Dora Ellen Thomas was born on 19 March 1861 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of John Thomas and Julia Phelps.¹ Dora Ellen Thomas married Solomon Davenport Offensend, son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport, on 19 November 1883.¹ Dora Ellen Thomas died on 18 February 1930 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA, at age 68.¹

     Leonard McCune Offensend was born on 24 March 1864 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport.¹ Leonard McCune Offensend married Sarah Clancy, daughter of Patrick Clancy, on 21 September 1887.¹ Leonard McCune Offensend died on 22 November 1945 at age 81.¹


Leonard with his parents moved to the farm near Conneautville, Pennsylvania, when he was four years old. This farm was frequented by all of the relatives and became known by them as "The Old Homestead."

Sarah, after her graduation from high school, became a teacher, which profession she followed until their marriage. They began their married life on the parental farm, "The Old Homestead," and lived there together for fifty two years.

"The Grange was one of the most important social outlets in their lives and to this they both belonged for many years. They were active in the rural church there in Dicksonburg, and this same church has been the scene of many marriages, family affairs, and funerals, many members of the family having been laid to rest in the cemetery near by." ²

Leonard and Sarah were enumerated in the 1920 Summerhill, Crawford Co., PA, federal census, ED 43, page 7A, living next door to brother Solomon. He was a farmer age 55, she was 55. Also in the household was his mother Katherine, and son Carman, age 16.

     Sarah Clancy was born on 26 August 1863 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Patrick Clancy.¹ Sarah Clancy married Leonard McCune Offensend, son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport, on 21 September 1887.¹ Sarah Clancy died on 16 February 1940 at age 76.¹

     Frederick Offensend was born on 28 June 1866.¹ He was the son of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport.¹ Frederick Offensend died on 13 October 1866.¹

     Harriet May Offensend was born on 28 October 1869 at Conneautville, Crawford Co., PA.¹ She was the daughter of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport.¹ Harriet May Offensend married Charles William Brice, son of John William Brice and Eliza Jane Bowdish, on 3 July 1888 at Summerhill, Crawford Co., PA.¹ Harriet May Offensend died on 20 March 1956 at Akron, Summit Co., OH, at age 86.¹


Charles was valedictorian of his graduating class in Conneautville, Pennsylvania. He ranked as highest salesman for the New York Life Insurance Company. His motto was "Never blow out another's candle to make your own shine brighter. ²"

     Charles William Brice was born on 12 December 1867 at Titusville, PA.¹ He was the son of John William Brice and Eliza Jane Bowdish.¹ Charles William Brice married Harriet May Offensend, daughter of Amos Offensend and Katherine Davenport, on 3 July 1888 at Summerhill, Crawford Co., PA.¹ Charles William Brice died on 28 January 1925 at Meadville, Crawford Co., PA, at age 57.¹

     Charles Offensend was born on 11 August 1885 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Solomon Davenport Offensend and Dora Ellen Thomas.¹ Charles Offensend died on 14 May 1903 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA, at age 17.¹

     Amos John Offensend was born on 30 January 1894 at Dicksonburg, Crawford Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Solomon Davenport Offensend and Dora Ellen Thomas.¹ Amos John Offensend married Helen Hazel Elizabeth Hafer, daughter of Clarence Michael Hafer and Laura Edith Lucas, on 19 December 1936 at Jamestown, NY.¹ Amos John Offensend died on 30 May 1957 at Ojai, Ventura Co., CA, at age 63.¹


Helen's profession is teaching school, and she has taught for several years in Cochranton, Pennsylvania, and in Ojai, California. She acquired her Master's Degree in The Science of Elementary Education, in 1959. ²

     Helen Hazel Elizabeth Hafer was born on 4 June 1913 at Geneva, PA.^1,2 She was the daughter of Clarence Michael Hafer and Laura Edith Lucas.¹ Helen Hazel Elizabeth Hafer married Amos John Offensend, son of Solomon Davenport Offensend and Dora Ellen Thomas, on 19 December 1936 at Jamestown, NY.¹ Helen Hazel Elizabeth Hafer died in August 1987 at Seaford, Sussex Co., DE, at age 74.²
