In 1620, another disaster struck the storm tossed Mayflower in mid Atlantic. One of the passengers, a young indentured servant of John Carver called John Howland, grew restless down below and ventured out of the fetid depths of the 'tween decks and stepped onto the deck. He was swept overboard by a mountainous wave and then miraculously rescued by grabbing the topsail halyard which was trailig behind the ship. John Howland went on to be the thirteenth signatory of the Mayflower Compact and was present at the first Thanksgiving. He sired 10 children and had 88 grandchildren. Had he lost his hold and drowned on that fateful day, the two Presidents Bush, President Roosevelt and Humphrey Bogart would not have existed as they are all descendants of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley.

Pilgrim William Bradford described the event as follows:

''in a mighty storme, a lustie yonge man (called John Howland) coming upon some occasion above the grattings, was, with a seele of the shipe throwne in the sea; but it pleased God that he caught hould of the top-saile halliards, which hunge over board, and rane out at length; yet he held his hould (though he was sundrie fathomes under water) till he was hald up by the same rope to the brime of the water, and then with a boat hooke and other means got into the shipe againe, and his life saved; and though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after, and became a profitable member both in church and commone wealthe.''

     Elizabeth Tilley was baptized on 30 August 1607 at Henlow, Huntingdodnshire, England.³ She was the daughter of John Tilley and Joan Hurst.² Elizabeth Tilley married John Howland before 25 March 1624 at Plymouth, MA.^1,4,3 Elizabeth Tilley died on 22 December 1687 at Swansea, Bristol Co., MA, at age 80.³

     Ethelyn Anna Holcombe was born on 31 July 1907. She was the daughter of Homer Leroy Holcombe and Grace Lorraine Dickerman.

     Ronald Dickerman Holcombe was born on 9 August 1909.¹ He was the son of Homer Leroy Holcombe and Grace Lorraine Dickerman. Ronald Dickerman Holcombe died on 27 August 2001 at Solvang, Santa Barbara, CA, at age 92.¹

     John Franklin Huntley also went by the name of Frank Huntley. He was born on 3 November 1910 at Chicago, Cook Co., IL.¹ He married Ruth Minnie McCarty, daughter of Lowell James McCarty and Minni Violet McConkie, on 25 November 1938 at Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.¹ John Franklin Huntley died in September 1976 at Kalamazoo, MI, at age 65.¹

     Dennis Lowell Huntley was born on 16 March 1943 at Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.¹ He was the son of John Franklin Huntley and Ruth Minnie McCarty.¹ Dennis Lowell Huntley died on 27 July 2001 at Traverse City, MI, at age 58; prostate cancer.¹
