Zenas was a blacksmith, and as early as 1769, removed to Pittsfield, Mass., and thence, as early as 1771, to Washington, Mass. In the later town, he for may years kept a public house. He was, in 1788, a delagte from Washington to the Massachusetts Constitutional convention. Administration on his estate was granted to his son William, Apr. 6, 1813, and the estate was appraised at $3,241.08.³

     Hannah Jones was born on 12 December 1747 at Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She married Zenas Noble, son of Noah Noble and Sarah Barber, on 22 April 1769.¹ Hannah Jones died in January 1791 at age 43.¹

     Margaret Noble was born on 21 October 1746 at Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She was the daughter of Israel Noble and Elizabeth Miller.² Margaret Noble married Zenas Noble, son of Noah Noble and Sarah Barber, in November 1791.¹ Margaret Noble died on 25 May 1838 at Huron, Wayne Co., NY, at age 91.¹

     Elizabeth Miller was born on 12 March 1707 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She married Israel Noble, son of Dea. Thomas Noble and Elizabeth Dewey, on 10 May 1739.¹ Elizabeth Miller died on 17 June 1799 at Hartford, VT, at age 92.¹

Robert J. Noble Sr., 87, of Broad Brook, beloved husband of Joyce (Phillips) Noble died peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2022, at home, surrounded by his family.

Robert was born on June 26, 1935, in East Hartford, CT, son of the late Raymond and Emma (Arlt) Noble. Robert grew up in East Hartford and graduated from Hartford Technical High School where he learned to be a woodworker. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Upon returning from the service, he went to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford and retired as a supervisor after many years of service. He also owned and operated R & J Woodworking where he worked as a wood craftsman taking his business to craft shows and fairs all over New England.

Robert loved to spend time in Newport, RI. He loved to ski in his younger years and was the president of the East Hartford Ski Club. He enjoyed BINGO, NASCAR, morning coffee at DD, and most importantly spending time with his family. Along with his wife Joyce of over 54 years, he leaves children, Scott Noble of Enfield, Laura (Noble) Reed and her husband Alfred of Windsor, Robert J. Noble Jr. of Broad Brook, and Robin N. Hankard and her husband Timothy of South Windsor; his grandchildren, Brian Von Deck and Abbey Von Deck; two stepsons, Gary Von Deck of Hebron, and Brett Von Deck and his wife Janet of Middletown; and a niece Debbie Johnston of East Hartford and Nephew Craig Johnston of East Hartford. He was predeceased by his siblings, Raymond Noble Jr., William Noble, Marion Noble and Carolyn Johnston. Services are private at the request of his family. Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.

John received a land grant in Plymouth on December 18, 1635, and had a partnership with John Rogers at Duxbury in 1638/9. He was a freeman of Duxbury on June 4, 1650. The same year, he built a bridge over the South River.

His age was stated to be 53 years when he was deposed on January 4, 1674/5. In October of 1675, he was captain of a company of militia who fought against the Indians and was wounded during the Great Swamp Fight in Rhode Island dying from fever caused by the wound. His family received a grant of land in Barnstable for his service. In 1760, the town was incorporated under the name Gorham in honor of Capt. John.

The town of Gorham, Maine was named in his honor and first settled by some of his ancestors as well as those descendants of several other soldiers who had fought in King Philip's War. This land area in southern Maine was originally called, "Narragansett #19" referring to those soldiers who had fought in the Narragansett area in Rhode Island and was given to these families as a bounty for the sacrifice of their soldier/ancestors.

He died intestate. Administration granted to the widow and sons, James and John Gorham in 1675/6. The rights of the minor children were ordered to be guarded. Division of the estate was made to the widow, Desire, and children: James, John, Jabez, Mercye, Lydia, Hannah, and Shubal. Fifty pounds was set aside for the education of Shubel and the bond was signed March 9, 1676.

Signer of US Constitution. He was a self-made real estate magnate whose extensive contributions at the US Constitutional Convention helped shape much of America's guiding principles.

Born in Massachusetts, he received little formal education before being sent as an apprentice, at the age of fifteen, to a Connecticut businessman. In 1759 he returned to his hometown of Charlestown, Massachusetts where he established a successful business and became a public notary. In 1771 he was elected to the provincial legislature and served until 1775. He believed strongly in American independence. He sat on the Board of War from 1778 to 1781 and became famous for his organizational and management skills because of the way he helped manage the logistics and manpower of the Massachusetts military. His efforts were rewarded as he was elected to both houses of his new state's legislature and served at the Massachusetts constitutional convention. In 1782 he was sent to represent his state in the Continental Congress. He served from 1782 to 1783, from 1786 to 1787 and again in 1789. He was president of the Congress from 1786 to 1787. In 1787 he was selected to represent Massachusetts at the US Constitutional Convention. He took an active role in the convention serving on the "Committee of Detail" and serving as Chairman of the "Committee for the Whole" and for several months as assistant President to the Convention when George Washington was unable to attend. He campaigned for a strong central government that could regulate the use of paper money and interstate commerce while promoting international trade. He fought for long terms for senators and presidents, sought to give the Congress wide powers while favoring the concept of the President appointing federal judges. In spite of his passionate work on behalf of his new nation he believed it would prove unsuccessful and that the nation was too large and diverse to remain as one. In 1788 he entered into a land deal involving six million acres in western New York. The venture did not work out and he and his partners were unable to fulfill their financial obligations leaving him in financial ruin and causing him to lose his political popularity. However, even though he had no legal training, he was appointed a state judge and sat on the bench from 1788 until he resigned in 1796. He died in his hometown at the age of fifty-eight.

In 1769, the family moved toMedford, Massachusetts, his father's native town, where Brooks boyhood was spent working on the family farm.

After his father's death, in 1781, he was apprenticed to a trade in Boston, walking to the city, a distance of seven miles, every day.

In 1789, he engaged in the business ofmarine insurance, often for ships involved in the kidnapping and sale of African people through the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and accumulated a large fortune.^[6]He kept with his own hand very accurate accounts, a rare thing in those days, and made it a rule never to borrow money, never to engage in speculation of any kind, and never to take more than the legal rate of interest. He retired from business in 1803, and, until 1806, devoted himself to the settlement of all the risks in which he was interested.

He then accepted the presidency of the New England Insurance Company, the first chartered company of the kind in the state, and filled the office for several years. In his retirement at Medford he took special pleasure in the cultivation of trees, planting many thousands of them about his farm. He was at different times a member of both branches of the legislature, of the firstBoston City Council, and of theMassachusetts Constitutional Convention of 1820–1821.

While in the legislature, he took a prominent part in suppressing lotteries, which at that time were flourishing in the state. Mr. Brooks gave liberally, and without parade, to many benevolent objects, and, besides this, his private donations for many years exceeded his domestic expenses.

He bequeathed what was believed to be the largest estate in Boston, about two million dollars, to his seven surviving children. He was originally buried at theSalem Street Burying GroundinMedford, Massachusetts, but was later relocated to a family plot in Oak Grove Cemetery, near theBrooks Estatein Medford.
