From the Gallipolis Journal, viewed on FindAGrave, accessed 29 July 2021:

Holcomb—Gen. Anselm T. Holcomb was born in Virginia, March 14, 1803. In 1805 he removed with his father, the late Gen. Sam’l R. Holcomb, to Vinton, Gallia county, Ohio, and settled on the farm which he has ever since resided, making a space of over seventy-two years. His youth was passed amid the eventful scenes which filled up the lives of our early settlers. His early education was necessarily of that kind to which pioneers are always restricted. He enjoyed, however, the advantages of a few sessions at the Academy in Gallipolis, and frequently walked to and from that place on Friday evenings and Monday Mornings. He was possessed of an exceeding well balanced mind, which was constantly enriched during his long and eventful life by reading, conversation and study. He early took an active part in public affairs of his county and State, in which his wisdom and counsel were ever welcome. In 1825 he was married to Esther Mathews, with whom he lived in harmony until her death in 1869. Her loss, to him, was irreparable, and he regarded it as the great sorrow of his life. They lost their only child, a daughter, in her infancy, over forty-six years ago.
He was made Brig. Gen’l of Militia, July 22, 1837. He served two terms in the Legislature of Ohio, from 1817 to 1830, where he gained for himself an enviable reputation by his integrity, statesmanship, and an earnest devotion to the interests of the people. In 1840 he graduated at the Cincinnati Law School, and soon after to a high position at the bar of Gallia and adjoining counties. In 1855 he founded the Gallia Republican, and continued as its editor and publisher for several years. This was the first Republican newspaper printed in the County, and among the first in the State. He founded and laid out the beautiful village of Vinton, which to him, and to many also who will read this, was ever
“Loveliest village of the plain.”

In Masonry he was among the most distinguished of our State, as his advancement to the sublime degree of High Priesthood will testify. He was ever an honored and leading spirit in the fraternity, and Vinton lodge, of which he was the founder, may well be proud to say that so bright a light so long illuminated tis mysteries.
In May, 1871, while on a visit to his brother, in Butler, Missouri, he was stricken with paralysis, from which he never recovered, and which resulted in his death, July 14th 1877. The last six years of his life were to him years of tedious, hopeless suffering, and well might he say, as he often did: “Oh, why are my winters so long!”
The funeral services were held at Vinton, on Sunday, July 15th, at 3 p.m. Rev. I. Z. Haning delivered an excellent and appropriate discourse from Psalms; 71, 9: “Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.”
The Masonic burial service was conducted by Bro. D. B. Hebard, and a numerous array of brethren from the lodges of Vinton, Gallipolis, Wilkesville, Cheshire and other places. It was one of the grandest ovations to a man and a Mason ever witnessed. No Mason could wish a better. The attendance of friends from all parts of the country was immense.
Like all of us, Gen. Holcomb had his rough points. Error and frailty checker the life of man. If this were not so earth would be heaven, for what could add to the happiness of a life from error or frailty? The man we mourn was human; but the errors which belonged to him often took their color from virtue itself. On these he needs no silence, even if the grave which now closes over him did not refuse its echoes except to what is good. His intimate associates were many, and to these he ever seemed firmly attached. Fawning and flattery were foreign to his nature. With much truth it may be said of him that he was
“Lofty and sour to those who loved him not. But, to those men that sought him, sweet as summer.”
The light has gone out, but in the temple of our memories, is enshrined the noble, the commanding presence.
“A combination and a form indeed,
Where every god did seem to set his seal.
To give the world assurance of a man.”.
