     Esther Eliza Loomis was born on 11 March 1861 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 She was the daughter of Burdett Loomis and Lucretia M. Tucker.³ Esther Eliza Loomis married Hawley Pettibone, son of Jared Chittenden Pettibone Jr. and Mary Ann Hawley, on 27 April 1887.¹ Esther Eliza Loomis died in 1951.¹ She was buried at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon, Oneida Co., NY.¹

     Burdett Loomis was born on 25 January 1838 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Allen Loomis and Eliza Hathaway.² Burdett Loomis married Lucretia M. Tucker, daughter of Richard Tucker and Esther Post, on 2 February 1859 at Essex, Middlesex Co., CT.¹

Burdett and Lucretia M. were enumerated in the 1900 West Hartford, Hartford Co., CT, federal census. He was a gas manufacturer, age 62, she was 62. The only child in the house hold was Grace L. 37. Also enumerated in the household was Esther Tucker, mother-in-law, age 89.

He is an inventor and manufacturer of gas plant machinery. His inventions in the field of gas machinery are many and valuable, ranking among the most efficient and economical discoveries in this field, as the Patent Office Reports show.

The genial personality of Burdett Loomis, inventor and engineer, is known to a wide circle of acquaintances in this country and abroad.

Born of a family that has produced many able and scholarly men, his native ingenuity and intense activity, has accomplished much that benefits mankind.

In 1881, he organized the Steam Heating Company of Hartford, and in 1882, the first Electric Lighting Company. Owing to the loss and difficulty in transmission of steam heat, he thought of substituting a cheap gas for the heating medium, and invented cheaper methods of gas making which have come into general use for the production of gas for gas engines and fuel purposes.

From 1886 to 1889, he erected the first gas plant that produced fixed clean producer and water gas from all varieties of fuel, delivering it into holders and piping it long distances through ordinary pipe to furnace, gas engine, and houses for domestic use.

The producer has was generated by drawing the air down though the fires, the resulting gas passing through boilers, which utilized the sensible heat, then through scrubbers and exhausters, delivering a clean, purified gas to gas holders.

With the down draft principle, all of the tarry and volatile matters in the fuel are decomposed into fixed gases and the apparatus converts all of the fuel into gas, when using bituminous coal, wood, lignite, etc.

When the fires became highly heated, water gas was made by passing steam in an opposite direction through the fire, and delivering it to a separate holder. The producer has is used for metallurgical work, and with the advent of large gas engines, will be extensively used for power propositions. The water gas is used for manufacturing purposes where high local heat is required, for Welsbach lights, and domestic use.

Illuminating gas was made by missing with the water gas, gases produced from oil, resins, etc., which was made in retorts.

He has been interested in the organization of many Gas, Electric and Manufacturing Companies. Now at 70 years of age, he is an active member of the firm of Loomis-Pettibone Company, Engineers, New York, and is devoting special attention to the utilization of wood waste for gas making, and the production of by-products, turpentine, etc, and of wood pulp.

When not busy with his many interests, he retires for rest and recreation to his beautiful home in the suburbs of Hartford, Conn., spending his days out of doors among his flowers and shrubs, of which he is an enthusiastic and scientific cultivator. Loving nature, he studies her wonderful processes and endeavors to turn them to the service and happiness of humanity. His wife adorns the home, and innumerable have been the acts of gracious hospitality enjoyed at this household by its many friends.

He is the president of the “Loomis Family Association” of America, and the publication of this edition of the Loomis Genealogy is due to his planning and financiering. To him every Loomis in America is forever indebted for this volume of their ancestral records. His home is at 837 Prospect Ave., Hartford, Conn. ³

     Lucretia M. Tucker was born on 4 February 1838 at Essex, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Richard Tucker and Esther Post.¹ Lucretia M. Tucker married Burdett Loomis, son of Allen Loomis and Eliza Hathaway, on 2 February 1859 at Essex, Middlesex Co., CT.¹

     Esther Post was born in March 1811 at CT.²

     Allen Loomis was born on 6 April 1795 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.¹ He was the son of Ham Loomis and Elizabeth Allen.² Allen Loomis married Eliza Hathaway, daughter of Luther Hathaway and Clara Safford, on 9 December 1819.¹ Allen Loomis married Hilda Root, daughter of Gideon Root and Eunice Whitney, on 4 October 1840.¹ Allen Loomis died on 25 October 1864 at Suffield, Hartford Co., CT, at age 69.¹

Allen was a farmer and a member of the State Legislature in 1844.³

     Eliza Hathaway was born on 2 October 1799.¹ She was the daughter of Luther Hathaway and Clara Safford.¹ Eliza Hathaway married Allen Loomis, son of Ham Loomis and Elizabeth Allen, on 9 December 1819.¹ Eliza Hathaway died on 11 December 1839 at age 40.¹

     Hilda Root was born on 19 January 1805.¹ She was the daughter of Gideon Root and Eunice Whitney.¹ Hilda Root married Allen Loomis, son of Ham Loomis and Elizabeth Allen, on 4 October 1840.¹ Hilda Root died on 2 December 1879 at age 74.¹

     Ham Loomis was born on 28 November 1758 at Westfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ He was the son of Capt. Noah Loomis and Rhoda L. Clark. Ham Loomis married Elizabeth Allen in 1782.¹ Ham Loomis died on 3 August 1827 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA, at age 68.¹

     Elizabeth Allen married Ham Loomis, son of Capt. Noah Loomis and Rhoda L. Clark, in 1782.¹ Elizabeth Allen died on 21 March 1829.¹

     Joseph Hawley Pettibone was born on 18 August 1884.¹ He was the son of Hawley Pettibone and Philena Hibbard.¹ Joseph Hawley Pettibone died after 1935.¹

     Dorothy Loomis Pettibone was born on 8 April 1888 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Hawley Pettibone and Esther Eliza Loomis.¹ Dorothy Loomis Pettibone married Richard Kerfoot Haughton, son of Benjamin Frankland Haughton and Elizabeth Erdan Kerfoot, on 7 September 1911 at New Rochelle Park, NY.¹ Dorothy Loomis Pettibone died in 1958 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.¹ She was buried at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon, Oneida Co., NY.¹

Richard was Vice President of US Cast Iron Pipe. They lived in Birmingham, AL, in 1929.¹

     Richard Kerfoot Haughton was born on 20 February 1885 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Benjamin Frankland Haughton and Elizabeth Erdan Kerfoot.¹ Richard Kerfoot Haughton married Dorothy Loomis Pettibone, daughter of Hawley Pettibone and Esther Eliza Loomis, on 7 September 1911 at New Rochelle Park, NY.¹ Richard Kerfoot Haughton died on 4 December 1969 at Riverton, Burlington Co., NJ, at age 84.^1,2 He was buried at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon, Oneida Co., NY.¹

     Ann Haughton was born on 26 July 1914 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co, AL.¹ She was the daughter of Richard Kerfoot Haughton and Dorothy Loomis Pettibone.¹ Ann Haughton married Willis Hubbard Sargent, son of Frank Charles Sargent and Mary Louise Hubbard, on 29 December 1936 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co, AL.¹ Ann Haughton died on 14 February 1998 at Valley Hospital, Las Vegas, Clark Co., NV, at age 83.^1,2 She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.¹

Willis graduated from Yale with a BA in 1918, from Harvard with a law degree in 1923. He was elected to the New York Assembly in 1925 and served 8 years. Then served one term as President of the Syracuse Common council. Later he was elected to the California State Assembly before enlisting to serve in the US Navy in WW II. After a distinguished naval service earning the Legion of Merit he worked on the post war Hoover Commission for government reform. He returned to Syracuse in 1954 and practiced law including his son richard in the practice. He also was elected to the Onondaga County Legislature and was Chairman when he died.¹

     Willis Hubbard Sargent was born on 11 October 1896 at 146 Holland St., Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.¹ He was the son of Frank Charles Sargent and Mary Louise Hubbard.¹ Willis Hubbard Sargent married Ann Haughton, daughter of Richard Kerfoot Haughton and Dorothy Loomis Pettibone, on 29 December 1936 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co, AL.¹ Willis Hubbard Sargent died on 22 August 1976 at Wellesley Island, Town of Alexandria, Jefferson Co., NY, at age 79.^1,2 He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.¹

     Frank Charles Sargent was born on 28 March 1868 at Pulaski, Oswego Co., NY.² He was the son of Charles Rogers Sargent and Mary Catherine Diefendorf.² Frank Charles Sargent married Mary Louise Hubbard, daughter of Charles Henry Hubbard and Mary Elizabeth Brainerd, on 20 January 1896.¹ Frank Charles Sargent died on 14 October 1910 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 42.² He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.²

     Mary Louise Hubbard was born on 31 March 1868 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.² She was the daughter of Charles Henry Hubbard and Mary Elizabeth Brainerd. Mary Louise Hubbard married Frank Charles Sargent, son of Charles Rogers Sargent and Mary Catherine Diefendorf, on 20 January 1896.¹ Mary Louise Hubbard married Thomas Mentor Howard on 25 March 1916 at 202 Summit Ave., Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY; by Rev. Almon A. Jaynes.² Mary Louise Hubbard died on 8 September 1969 at Gloucester, Essex Co., MA, at age 101.² She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.²

Frank Sargent died an untimely death, as did his father. He left three young children and a heralded career as a civil trial lawyer. The sub titles of one of the news articles about him stated; "Leader in Profession at Early Age After a Boyhood of Poverty and Hard Work Genial Disposition Earned Friends." The article continued to expound upon this beloved man, including some of the following:

Death was due to appendicitis (the treatment of which was too long delayed). At the time he was taken sick Mrs. Sargent was a Atlantic City, but was called home Wednesday morning and reached his bedside in the afternoon.

Seldom in recent years has the death of a lawyer so stirred the members of the legal profession in Syracuse. Although but 42 years of age, by energy and fair dealing he had built up one of the finest practices in Central New York. His genial disposition and kindliness of heart had won the affection of practically every lawyer at the bar and the confidence and high regard of the judiciary in the courts where his practice called him.

Mr. Sargent was born at Pulaski. When 9 years old his father died, and the few hundred dollars of the estate was lost in a bank failure. Frank attended school and his mother took in sewing. His education, however, was interrupted by the necessity to earn money for the family's support. He early determined to be a lawyer and pursued his studies when he could, finally graduating with high honors at the Pulaski Academy.

While still a boy he secured a position on the Oswego Paladium, soliciting subscriptions and advertising. He was offered a partnership in the paper, but chose law. At 22 he studied law in Syracuse and to support himself, mother and sister he collected debts for Syracuse merchants. His income was small, but his ambition was great. He had wished to attend college, but the support of his mother and sister, the latter of whom was dying with tuberculosis made this impossible. The fight that the young man put up against adverse circumstances is the subject of common comment among the lawyers of that day. Often he went hungry and with poor clothes that his mother and sister might be as comfortable as he could make them.

He was admitted to the bar April 14, 1894, having studied in several law offices. He gradually built up a general and then a noted trial practice. He became active in social and public matters and was a guest at almost every function in honor of visiting judges. A year before his death (1909) he purchased an automobile and took frequent trips about the country. His funeral cortege was one of the largest ever witnessed in the city. Many of the foremost members of the bench and bar attended the brief services at the home at No. 202 Summit Avenue, and most followed to the interment at Oakwood Cemetery.²

     Loomis Pettibone was born on 13 October 1889 at Hartford, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Hawley Pettibone and Esther Eliza Loomis.¹ Loomis Pettibone married Rena Maude Clark, daughter of George Gilbert Clark and Kathrine Jones, on 15 July 1916.¹ Loomis Pettibone died on 8 July 1935 at Vernon Center, Oneida Co., NY, at age 45.¹ He was buried on 11 July 1935 at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, Oneida Co., NY.¹

Loomis was a Construction Engineer; noted in his obituary as a member of one of the oldest and prominent families of Vernon Center. He was a member of Chi Psi and was fraduated from Stevens College, Hoboken, NJ, in 1912. He previously attended St. John's Military Academy at Delafield, WI. He served in WW I with Company C, 78th Regiment in France and attained the rank of Colonel.¹

Rena had lived in Vernon many years before moving to Manlius. She was a member of the Vernon Center Presbyterian Chruch and a graduate of the Oswego Normal School. She taught Sunday School and ws the leader of Girl Scout Troop 11 organized in Vernon Center in 1932. Her daughter Patricia was one of the first members.¹

     Rena Maude Clark was born on 12 October 1885 at Waterville, NY.¹ She was the daughter of George Gilbert Clark and Kathrine Jones.¹ Rena Maude Clark married Loomis Pettibone, son of Hawley Pettibone and Esther Eliza Loomis, on 15 July 1916.¹ Rena Maude Clark died on 25 June 1972 at Nursing Home, Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 86.^1,2 She was buried at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, Oneida Co., NY.¹

     Patricia Pettibone was born on 21 April 1917 at Rome, Oneida Co., NY.¹ She was the daughter of Loomis Pettibone and Rena Maude Clark.¹ Patricia Pettibone died on 6 July 1980 at Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 63.^1,2 She was buried at Vernon Center Cemetery, Vernon Center, Oneida Co., NY.²

Patricia attended William Smith College. She was the first girl of Vernon Group 11 to receive Girl Scouting's top award, the Golden Eaglet.¹

     Elizur Spencer was born on 28 January 1728/29 at Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Benjamin Spencer and Dorothy Spencer.¹ Elizur Spencer married Abigail Hazelton, daughter of Charles Hazelton and Abigail Chatfield.¹ Elizur Spencer died before 1790.¹

     Abigail Hazelton was born circa 1730.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Hazelton and Abigail Chatfield.¹ Abigail Hazelton married Elizur Spencer, son of Benjamin Spencer and Dorothy Spencer.¹ Abigail Hazelton died after 1790.¹

     Abigail Spencer was born on 23 February 1763 at Haddam, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Elizur Spencer and Abigail Hazelton.¹ Abigail Spencer was baptized in March 1763.¹ She married Robert Brainerd, son of Benjamin Brainerd and Mary Chapman, on 24 May 1787.¹ Abigail Spencer died on 22 February 1815 at South Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA, at age 51.¹

     Robert Brainerd was born on 29 September 1765 at Haddam Neck, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Benjamin Brainerd and Mary Chapman.¹ Robert Brainerd married Abigail Spencer, daughter of Elizur Spencer and Abigail Hazelton, on 24 May 1787.¹ Robert Brainerd died on 18 June 1831 at South Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA, at age 65.¹

     Elizur Spencer Brainerd was born on 9 April 1802 at Haddam Neck, Middlesex Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Robert Brainerd and Abigail Spencer.¹ Elizur Spencer Brainerd married Lyndia Fuller, daughter of Jonah Dayton Fuller and Lyndia Squires, on 28 January 1830 at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY.¹ Elizur Spencer Brainerd died on 17 April 1874 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 72.¹

     Lyndia Fuller was also known as Lydia Fuller.¹ She was born on 21 December 1809 at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY.¹ She was the daughter of Jonah Dayton Fuller and Lyndia Squires.¹ Lyndia Fuller married Elizur Spencer Brainerd, son of Robert Brainerd and Abigail Spencer, on 28 January 1830 at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY.¹ Lyndia Fuller died on 7 November 1863 at Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY, at age 53.¹

     Mary Elizabeth Brainerd was born on 23 March 1840 at Cropseyville, Rensselaer Co., NY.¹ She was the daughter of Elizur Spencer Brainerd and Lyndia Fuller.¹ Mary Elizabeth Brainerd married Charles Henry Hubbard, son of Francis E. Hubbard and Jerusha Howe, on 20 January 1863.¹ Mary Elizabeth Brainerd died on 28 May 1921 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 81.¹ She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.¹

Charles "finished" his education at age 13 and worked for an uncle in Massachusetts, then went to a tannery, and finally entered the drug business. When 22 he and brother Josiah purchased a retail store in Syracuse. This was a business that lasted into future generations by his son, and then a cousin, George Bradley Hubbard. It was sold on George's death in 1926 to non-family men, but still continued. Charles and Mary build a large house n W. Onondaga Street, Syracuse that later housed the Child & Family Services Agency.¹

     Charles Henry Hubbard was born on 26 June 1839 at Brunswick, Rensselaer Co., NY.¹ He was the son of Francis E. Hubbard and Jerusha Howe.¹ Charles Henry Hubbard married Mary Elizabeth Brainerd, daughter of Elizur Spencer Brainerd and Lyndia Fuller, on 20 January 1863.¹ Charles Henry Hubbard died on 22 November 1905 at Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY, at age 66.¹ He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, Onondaga Co., NY.¹
