     Brooks Adams was born on 24 June 1848. He was the son of Charles Francis Adams and Abigail Brown Brooks. Brooks Adams died on 13 February 1927 at age 78.

Brooks Adams was an American historian, the youngest son of Charles Francis Adams, born in Quincy, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard University. Admitted to the bar in 1871, he practiced law for ten years before beginning his career as a writer. His first important work, The Emancipation of Massachusetts (1887), is a penetrating analysis of the religious and political forces that shaped the development of that colony. In The Law of Civilization and Decay (1895) he propounded an economic interpretation of history based on the factors governing the rise and fall of commerce. Adams applied the interpretation to his own times in America's Economic Supremacy (1901) and The New Empire (1902). His other writings include The Theory of Social Revolutions (1913), a brilliant, although pessimistic, study of the American democratic system.

     Henry Brooks Adams was born on 16 February 1838 at Boston, Suffolk Co., MA.¹ He was the son of Charles Francis Adams and Abigail Brown Brooks. Henry Brooks Adams married Marian Hooper on 27 June 1872.¹ Henry Brooks Adams died on 27 March 1918 at Washington, DC, at age 80.¹

One of the leading historians of the nineteenth-century United States, Henry is better known today for his brilliant autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams, which was not widely published until after his death.

Following the family tradition, Adams enrolled in Harvard in 1854, but he detested his college experience. He found Harvard suffocating and would later tryout innovative teaching techniques when he returned there as a history professor in the 1870s.

After his graduation in 1858, Adams spent the Civil War in London, where he was a secretary for his father, the American ambassador to Great Britain. Adams returned to the United States after the war and moved to Washington, DC. Although an ardent Republican, he became disillusioned by the corrupt administration of President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1870, Adams accepted a professorship at Harvard but could endure it for only seven years. He returned to Washington, where he wrote his best-known historical work, the nine-volume The History of the United States of America, a painstaking reconstruction of the administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

Near the end of his life, Adams began writing his autobiography, intending to circulate it only to close friends. It was first published in a private edition in 1907. The book is both an amazing chronicle of the nineteenth century and a work of literary art. The Education of Henry Adams won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1919. Since its publication, critics have marveled at Adams's lapidary prose and sharp insights into his times, and in 1999 the Modern Library named The Education the greatest nonfiction work of the twentieth century.

     Mercy Wright was born on 14 March 1669 at Northampton, MA. She was the daughter of Samuel Wright Jr. and Elizabeth Burt. Mercy Wright married Samuel Allen, son of Nehemiah Allen and Sarah Woodford. Mercy Wright died on 5 February 1728 at Litchfield, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 58.

     Joseph Allen was born on 14 October 1708 at Deerfield, Franklin Co., MA. He was the son of Samuel Allen and Mercy Wright. Joseph Allen married Mary Baker, daughter of John Baker, on 11 March 1736/37 at Woodbury, CT. Joseph Allen died on 4 April 1755 at Cornwall, CT, at age 46.

     Mary Baker was the daughter of John Baker. Mary Baker married Joseph Allen, son of Samuel Allen and Mercy Wright, on 11 March 1736/37 at Woodbury, CT.

     Ethan Allen was a patriot of the American Revolution, leader of the Green Mountain Boys, and champion of statehood for Vermont.

Allen was born on January 21, 1738, in Litchfield, Connecticut. In 1769 he moved to the region known as the New Hampshire Grants, comprising present-day Vermont. After settling in Bennington, he became prominently involved in the struggle between New York and New Hampshire for control of the region. Following rejection by the New York authorities of an appeal that the region be established as a separate province, Allen organized a volunteer militia, called the Green Mountain Boys, to resist and evict proponents of the New York cause. He was thereupon declared an outlaw by the royal governor of New York. At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Allen and his force offered their services against the British. On orders from the Connecticut legislature, he, the Connecticut soldier Benedict Arnold, and a contingent of the Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga early in the morning of May 10, 1775. Allen demanded surrender from the British commander "in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress." Subsequently, as a member of the army of General Philip John Schuyler, he rendered valuable service in the American military expedition against Canada. He was taken prisoner near Montréal in September 1775 and held in confinement until exchanged in 1778. Following his release by the British, he returned to his home and was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and major general of militia.

In 1778 Allen appeared before the Continental Congress in behalf of a claim by Vermont for recognition as an independent state. With his brother Ira Allen and other Vermonters he devoted most of his time thereafter to the territorial dispute. He negotiated with the governor of Canada between 1780 and 1783, ostensibly to establish Vermont as a British province. On the basis of this activity he was charged with treason, but, because the negotiations were demonstrably intended to force action on the Vermont case by the Continental Congress, the charge was never substantiated. He wrote a Narrative of Colonel Ethan Allen's Captivity (1779). Allen died in Burlington, Vermont, on February 12, 1789.

     Annie Massie was born on 10 August 1809 at OH. She was the daughter of Gen. Nathaniel Massie and Susan Everard. Annie Massie married William Young Strong, son of Dr. Joseph Strong and Rebecca Young, on 3 February 1835 at Jefferson Co., KY. Annie Massie died on 17 August 1860 at Piqua, OH, at age 51.

     William Everard Strong was born on 11 August 1836 at Chillicothe, OH. He was the son of William Young Strong and Annie Massie. William Everard Strong died on 14 May 1905 at New York City, NY, at age 68.

     Joseph Strong was born on 25 June 1839 at Chillicothe, OH. He was the son of William Young Strong and Annie Massie. Joseph Strong died on 10 January 1929 at age 89.

     Thomas Bissell Jr. was born on 2 October 1656 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Quartermaster Thomas Bissell and Abigail Moore. Thomas Bissell Jr. married Hester Strong, daughter of Elder John Strong and Abigail Ford, on 15 October 1678 at Northampton, MA. Thomas Bissell Jr. died on 26 December 1738 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 82.

     Hester Strong was born on 7 June 1661 at Northampton, MA. She was the daughter of Elder John Strong and Abigail Ford. Hester Strong married Thomas Bissell Jr., son of Quartermaster Thomas Bissell and Abigail Moore, on 15 October 1678 at Northampton, MA. Hester Strong died on 4 March 1726 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 64.

     Ebenezer Bissell was born on 1 August 1685 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Thomas Bissell Jr. and Hester Strong. Ebenezer Bissell married Unknown (?) circa 1716.      Capt. Aaron Bissell was born in 1726 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Ebenezer Bissell and Unknown (?) Capt. Aaron Bissell married Dorothy Stoughton, daughter of Samuel Stoughton and Abiah Pinney, on 5 December 1757 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Capt. Aaron Bissell died on 11 May 1787 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.

     Dorothy Stoughton was born on 19 December 1732 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Samuel Stoughton and Abiah Pinney. Dorothy Stoughton married Capt. Aaron Bissell, son of Ebenezer Bissell and Unknown (?), on 5 December 1757 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Dorothy Stoughton died on 5 December 1808 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 75.

     Chloe Bissell was born on 30 August 1758. She was the daughter of Capt. Aaron Bissell and Dorothy Stoughton. Chloe Bissell married Capt. Erastus Wolcott, son of Gen. Erastus Wolcott and Jerusah Wolcott, on 27 December 1783. Chloe Bissell died on 16 February 1802 at age 43.

     Capt. Erastus Wolcott was born on 6 July 1752. He was the son of Gen. Erastus Wolcott and Jerusah Wolcott. Capt. Erastus Wolcott married Chloe Bissell, daughter of Capt. Aaron Bissell and Dorothy Stoughton, on 27 December 1783. Capt. Erastus Wolcott died on 7 January 1797 at age 44.

     Helen Wolcott was born on 9 March 1794. She was the daughter of Capt. Erastus Wolcott and Chloe Bissell. Helen Wolcott married Horace Hooker, son of Capt. James Hooker and Mary Chaffee, on 3 September 1822. Helen Wolcott died on 4 April 1840 at age 46.

     Horace Hooker was born on 5 July 1794. He was the son of Capt. James Hooker and Mary Chaffee. Horace Hooker married Helen Wolcott, daughter of Capt. Erastus Wolcott and Chloe Bissell, on 3 September 1822. Horace Hooker died on 3 November 1865 at age 71.

     Horace B. Hooker married Susan Pamelia Huntington. Horace B. Hooker was born on 7 December 1837. He was the son of Horace Hooker and Helen Wolcott.

     Susan Pamelia Huntington married Horace B. Hooker, son of Horace Hooker and Helen Wolcott.
