Gov. Caleb Strong1,2

b. 9 January 1745, d. November 1819
Gov. Caleb Strong was born on 9 January 1745. He was the son of Lt. Caleb Strong and Phebe Lyman. Gov. Caleb Strong was graduated in 1764 at Harvard, Cambridge, MA. He married Sarah Hooker in November 1777. Gov. Caleb Strong died in November 1819 at angina pectoris at age 74. He studied law with Major Joseph Hawley of Northampton and was very assiduous in the pursuit of his profession: county attorney 24 years (1776-1800); member of the convention for forming the state constitution of Massachusetts, and one of the committee that drew up that instrument which remained for forty years the fundamental law of the stae, and was then but slightly modified by the vconvention elected to revise and improve it where it seemed desirable after so long a period. In 1780, he was chosen state senator and every year afterwards chosen anew until 1789. In 1787, he was elected a delegate to the convention which formed the present Constitution of the United States. He was US Senator in the First Congress (1788-94), and again (1794-1800), but resigned his seat before the expiration of the second term of office. He was one of the committee that drew the Judiciary Act. He semed to be more fond of quiet private life thanof public life, to which however, he was continualy recalled by his trusting and admiring fellow citizens. In 1800, he was chosen Governor of Massachusetts. Although party feeling then ran high, and "federal" and "democrat" were words of a very positive sense, so much was he revered where he was best known, that not a single vote was cast against him in seven or eight towns of which Northampton was the centre. In 1810, he was nominated to the same office, and refused the nomination until after it was persistently and earnestly urges upon his acceptance, as he did not relish the excitement and tumult of stormy political life. he was a man of a gentle spirit, simple in his tastes and manners, frugal, modest, prudent, discreet, contented and altogether domestic in his habits. He was never charded with ambitious views. As early as 1772, he was a professing Christian, and acted plainly under the sense of religious obligation, and sought the praise of God rather than that of men. He was a pillar in the church at Northampton, and for many ears Prest. of the Hampshire Co. Missionary Society and of the Hampshire Bible Society. In the later years of his life he was much given to the study of the Scriptures and of theological works. Time grew less and eternity ever more in his thoughts. In private life he was affable and attractive. He had those magnetic qualities of character which with his integrity, simplicity and dignity drew all eyes and hearts to him. As a counsellor and an advocate alike he was a man of power.

He was a moderate Calvinist in his religioius views, and was liberal in his sympathies towards those who did not see divine truth in all its andles and apoects exactly as he himself did.

Gov. Strong was of medium height, erect, of a compact frame and graceful carriage. His wife, with whom he lived in wedlock for 40 years was a lady of pleasing aspect, strong good sense, fervent piety and remarkable sweetness of disposition. Their home was full of sunshine and of the peace and presence of God.

President Harry S Truman died on 26 December 1972 at Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, at age 88.2 He was buried at Truman Library, Independence, MO.

33rd president of the United States (1945-1953). Truman initiated the foreign policy of containing Communism, a policy that was the hallmark of the Cold War. He continued the welfare policies established under his predecessor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman helped to centralize power in the executive branch, a trend begun under Roosevelt. Truman's willingness to accept responsibility for difficult decisions made him one of the most controversial of presidents. Throughout his administration, Truman failed to rally congressional support for most of his program of domestic legislation, called the Fair Deal. However, he did secure sufficient legislative backing to produce an outstanding record in foreign affairs, especially in meeting what most Americans felt was the challenge posed by the rising power of the Communist bloc. During Truman's administration the United States became a charter member of the United Nations (UN) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO); sponsored important foreign policy initiatives known as the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and Point Four Program; and assumed a leading role in the fighting in the Korean War (1950-1953).
