He was one of those sturdy characters sometimes met with among the early frontier men whose minds are as vigorous and strong as their bodies, but whose avocations in life call forth more physical then mental exertion and development. He was enterprising and public-spirited, kind and hospitable, always ready to hellp the needy, --was above suspicion and reproach, and labored by precept and example to elevate his fellows to a higher manhood. In 1850 he made an overland trip to California, and came near perishing on the plains, but fortunately was rescued by other travelers. Ashbel Shepherd Hayden was born on 22 August 1803 at Montgomery Co., NY.¹ He was the son of Abijah Hayden and Orinda Shepherd.¹ Ashbel Shepherd Hayden married Cynthia Doubleday on 1 January 1828. Ashbel Shepherd Hayden died on 15 March 1878 at age 74.¹

     Philotas Hayden was also known as Philohis Hayden. Philotas Hayden was also known as Philotus Hayden. He was born on 6 March 1805 at Montgomery Co., NY.¹ He was the son of Abijah Hayden and Orinda Shepherd.¹ Philotas Hayden married Mary A. Broughton in 1830. Philotas Hayden married Eliza Burk in 1854. Philotas Hayden died in 1884.¹

Philotus "at the age of 25 went from the State of New York to the State of Michigan, when the latter state was largely a wilderness. He was very strong mentally and physically. Possessed of an unyielding will power, he was untiring in his efforts to accomplish whatever he undertook. He was always cheerful, hopeful, public-spirited, with a high sense of honor, one to whom many came for counsel and advice. He had a great fondness for poetry, and loved reading and music. He had a large acquaintance throughout the state (Michigan), and occupied many positions of trust and responsibility. He was a Representative in the State Legislature from 1844 to 1850, and State Senator from 1851 to 1859, and Presidential Elector in 1860. Of fine personal appearance and pleasing address, he always commanded attention to whatever he had to offer. He was not professedly religious, but adhered to a strict morality of life. -- Edwin V. Philotas was enumerated in the 1850 Hamilton, Van Buren Co., MI, federal census, household 3, family 3. He was a farmer, age 43. Mary was not eunmerated and the children listed were Charles and Arthur.

     Ormund Hayden was the son of Abijah Hayden and Orinda Shepherd. Ormund Hayden died in infancy.

     Ormund's parents removed from Plainfield to Fabius, NY, when he was five years old. When twenty-nine years of age he moved to County, Ill., with the early settlers of Northern Illinois, and married nine years later. In 1877 he removed to Waterloo, Iowa, where he died, 1887. Like his brothers, he possessed great physical strength and vigorous health, which carried him through life with scarcely a sick day, and singularly free from the pains and ills of life which ordinarily fall to the lot of men. He was a farmer by occupation, and but moderately successful. He knew what hard labor was, and what it was to struggle against adverse circumstances, yet he acquired sufficient to make him comfortable in old age, and his life-work and character are to his family a richer legacy than gold. Probably his strongest characteristic was his faith in God. He had a cheerful, contented, and hopeful disposition, and received the good which fell to his lot with thankfulness of heart, and accepted his trials and misfortunes with the utmost patience and Christian fortitude. Cheerfulness was a part of his religion, and when his approaching end cast its shadow over his family, he still urged them "to cultivate a cheerful spirit," and asked his daughter to continue to "sing about the house as usual." His Christian experience had extended over a period of fifty years, during which time he had been a valued member of the Baptist Church. He had an extensive acquaintance, and every one a friend. He possessed a rich vein of humor, was fond of joking; keen at apt illustration, he was seldom at a loss for a fitting story, which always had a pointed application, and always at this best when rallied. In the early days of pioneer life in Illinois, his resonant voice was heard far out on the prairies, and his hearty laugh inspired to cheerfulness the hearts of the whole neighborhood." --Edwin V. Ormund Hayden died on 25 January 1887 at Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., IA, at age 79.

     "Eliza was a woman of good mind, fond of reading, took great pleasure in argument and a very lively interest in politics. She was religious, having been converted when about fourteen. Her mind was clear and well adapted to literary pursuits." --Edwin V. Hayden Jabez Hayden. Eliza Maria Hayden was born on 21 July 1817 at Onondaga Co., NY. She was the daughter of Abijah Hayden and Orinda Shepherd. Eliza Maria Hayden married Gibson Wright on 6 June 1839.

     Gibson Wright married Eliza Maria Hayden, daughter of Abijah Hayden and Orinda Shepherd, on 6 June 1839.

     Sarah Orinda Wright was born on 24 March 1840.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden. Sarah Orinda Wright died on 24 August 1869 at age 29.

     Minerva Ann Wright was born on 14 October 1841.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     Cynthia Wright was born on 1 February 1843.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     Caroline M. Wright was born on 5 February 1845.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     Mary Adelaide Wright was born on 1 June 1848.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     Ormund Abijah Wright was born on 25 November 1846.¹ He was the son of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹ Ormund Abijah Wright died on 1 November 1848 at age 1.¹

     Julia Maria Wright was born on 9 December 1848.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹ Julia Maria Wright died on 14 September 1850 at age 1.¹

     Julia Maria Wright was born on 24 June 1851.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     Elizabeth Calista Wright was born on 29 December 1853.¹ She was the daughter of Gibson Wright and Eliza Maria Hayden.¹

     "Julia had a bright mind, a remarkable memory, and very cheerful temperament. She was gifted with a most amiable disposition, and was very dear to all who knew her. She was a most devout Christian, and lived a consistent life. She kept school for a time, was intelligent, self-reliant, void of affectation, frank and open-hearted.      Abigail Phelps was born on 1 November 1741 at Harwinton, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Lt. Samuel Phelps and Ruth Phelps.¹ Abigail Phelps married Ensign Elkanah Phelps, son of Capt. Abel Phelps and Mary Pinnuck, on 28 April 1762.

     Capt. Abel Phelps was born on 19 February 1705 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Joseph Phelps Sr. and Sarah Hosford.¹ Capt. Abel Phelps married Jerusha [-?-] Phelps circa 1730.²

     Jerusha [-?-] Phelps was born in 1706 at Goshen, Litchfield Co., CT.¹ She married Capt. Abel Phelps, son of Joseph Phelps Sr. and Sarah Hosford, circa 1730.¹ Jerusha [-?-] Phelps died on 1 January 1736 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Ensign Elkanah Phelps was born on 3 February 1742/43 at Goshen, Litchfield Co., CT. He was the son of Capt. Abel Phelps and Mary Pinnuck. Ensign Elkanah Phelps married Abigail Phelps, daughter of Lt. Samuel Phelps and Ruth Phelps, on 28 April 1762. Ensign Elkanah Phelps died on 5 December 1803 at Belchertown, Hampshire Co., MA, at age 60.

     Dr. Elisha Phelps was born on 13 September 1762 at Goshen, Litchfield Co., CT. He was the son of Ensign Elkanah Phelps and Abigail Phelps. Dr. Elisha Phelps died on 4 April 1829 at Peacham, Caledonia Co., VT, at age 66.¹

     Judge Charles Bartlett Phelps was born on 31 May 1788 at Chatham (later Portland), CT.² He was the son of Dr. Elisha Phelps and Molly Bartlet. Judge Charles Bartlett Phelps married Elsie Rutgers Marshall in 1809. Judge Charles Bartlett Phelps died on 21 December 1858 at Roxbury, Litchfield Co., CT, at age 70.²

     Elsie Rutgers Marshall was born in 1784. She married Judge Charles Bartlett Phelps, son of Dr. Elisha Phelps and Molly Bartlet, in 1809. Elsie Rutgers Marshall died in December 1825.

     George W Smith was born on 1 December 1866.¹ He was the son of George Smith and Cynthia Wright.¹

     Jabez Hayden lists Junietta as being born in 1860, when Mary would have been but 12. It is probably a typo for 1870 which would fit in with her siblings. Junietta Renne was born on 24 August 1870. She was the daughter of Lewis Renne and Mary Adelaide Wright.

     Carrie O. Renne was born on 1 November 1871.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Renne and Mary Adelaide Wright.¹

     Zelma Renne was born on 7 April 1873.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Renne and Mary Adelaide Wright.¹

     Irene Renne was born on 4 August 1876.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Renne and Mary Adelaide Wright.¹

     Blanche Renne was born on 20 October 1881.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis Renne and Mary Adelaide Wright.¹

     Emeline Ruleson was born on 27 December 1871. She was the daughter of George Ruleson and Julia Maria Wright.

     Blanche Ruleson was born on 28 May 1874. She was the daughter of George Ruleson and Julia Maria Wright.

     Alta Ruleson was born on 21 September 1880. She was the daughter of George Ruleson and Julia Maria Wright.

     Bith Ruleson was born on 4 May 1881. Bith Ruleson was the child of George Ruleson and Julia Maria Wright.
