Alvah E. Holcombe1
b. 2 April 1832, d. 1 May 1901
Alvah E. Holcombe was born on 2 April 1832 at PA.1 He was the son of Harvey Holcombe and Tryphena Lawless.1 Alvah E. Holcombe married Addie (?) after 1877. Alvah E. Holcombe died on 1 May 1901 at Jones Co., IA, at age 69.1
Alvah was enumerated in the 1860 Iowa census with Adaline, presumably his wife, and four girls: Cornelia age 21, Rebecca 17, Adaline 15, and Cynthia Cameron 14. Alvah must have married a widow or divorcee. His occupation is Lawyer, but it was more likely Sawyer, one who saws wood into boards, etc. The death of an Adaline Holcomb in 1877 is probably his wife. He signed his name just as A. H. in Louisa's autograph book with the address as Shelby, IA. That led us to finding him in Shelby County in an 1880 census as a billiard saloon keeper. Again his wife's name was Addie, but she was only 21. His latter years were spent in Jones Co., IA, where he had a wife, Carolyn from the West Indies, who died in 1890. Alvah paid $5.00 for a lot in Oakwood Cemetery at Monticello when Carolyn was buried. A Jones County marriage record that Alvah Holcomb married Mrs. Eunice dilke 23 April 1891 may be his fourth. He became a resident of the Jones County poor farm in 1894, was there in the 1900 census and died there 1 may 1901. He is buried beside Carolyn. Their graves are not marked so we had their names and dates encased in plastic and embedded in small white cement markers. As far as we know Alvah never had any children of his own.1

Lucinda C. Holcombe1
b. 7 June 1835
Lucinda C. Holcombe was born on 7 June 1835 at PA.1 She was the daughter of Harvey Holcombe and Tryphena Lawless.1
Lucinda may have married in Dubuque Co., IA, 2 Nov 1857, T. S. Crosley, but we have no verification. In the 1870 census of Delaware Co., IA, she seems to be the wife of Andrew Harris. The two boys, James and Edwin Harris are 17 and 21, so must be sons of Andrew by a previous marriage.
Andrew, Lucinda and Edwin are listed in the 1880 census with Lucinda as a dressmaker. There must have been a divorce after that because an 1885 census shows Andrew and the boys, but his wife is Alvira. Lucinda Harris married Henry Remore at Northwood, IA, 25 Feb 1892. After his death she married Lyman Fletcher 16 May 1895. Lucinda died 21 Apr 1899 and is buried in a cemetery in Northwood, IA. Her obituary named a Mrs. Milton of Oklahoma City, OK, as a granddaughter, but perhaps she was a step-granddaughter. 1
