     Annis Hayes was born on 17 May 1777.^3,4 She was the daughter of Capt. Silas Hayes and Hannah Holcombe. Annis Hayes married Levi Rice on 2 December 1799 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.³ Annis Hayes died on 20 February 1845 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 67. She was buried at Granby Center Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.⁵

     Levi Rice was born on 14 October 1775 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He married Annis Hayes, daughter of Capt. Silas Hayes and Hannah Holcombe, on 2 December 1799 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Levi Rice died on 3 May 1853 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 77.¹ He was buried at Granby Center Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Homer Moore was born on 23 July 1787 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.² He was the son of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Homer Moore died on 1 September 1881 at Worthington, Franklin Co., OH, at age 94.

Homer was a graduate of Yale, class of 1806, and a lawyer. The following is taken from the account book of Edward Phelps, Franklin Co., O.: "Homer Moore came to my house from Mass. July 5, 1811, and on August the 8th he was taken sick with a fever and on Sept. 1st he died. He was buried on Sept. the 3d in the Episcopal Graveyard at Worthington, Ohio." ³

     Fanny Moore was born on 15 January 1790 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She was the daughter of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Fanny Moore married Gen. Joseph Morton Forward, son of Joseph Forward II and Mary Owen.¹ Fanny Moore died on 8 January 1876 at age 85.

Joseph and Fanny were enumerated in the 1850 Southwick, Hampden Co., MA, fedeal census (stamped page 142). He was a farmer age 64, she was 60. Children in the household were Homer 33, Joseph 29, Mary 26, Andrew 24, Frances 22.

     Harriet Moore was born on 9 July 1792 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She was the daughter of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Harriet Moore married Dr. Daniel Benjamin, son of Samuel Benjamin and Rachel Holcombe. Harriet Moore died on 13 June 1839 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 46. She was buried in 1840 at Baptist Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Dr. Daniel Benjamin was born on 12 August 1786 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Samuel Benjamin and Rachel Holcombe. Dr. Daniel Benjamin married Harriet Moore, daughter of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Dr. Daniel Benjamin died on 14 May 1841 at age 54.¹ He was buried at Baptist Cemetery, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

"He was kind of heart, but brusque and willful. People trusted his judgment in his profession, but he irritated pious people by his open disregard of the prevailng religious sentiments." ²

     Roger Moore was born on 18 August 1795.¹ He was the son of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Roger Moore died on 15 November 1800 at age 5.¹

     Rosetta Maria Moore was born in 1804 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA. She was the daughter of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Rosetta Maria Moore died on 13 August 1861.

     Roger Sherman Moore was born on 25 July 1806 at Southwick, Hampden Co., MA.² He was the son of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Roger Sherman Moore married Sarah Ann Root on 6 October 1841 at Granville, Hampden Co., MA.³ Roger Sherman Moore died on 31 December 1893 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA, at age 87.³

Roger was a graduate of Yale College in the class of 1827. The class numbered 80 and included, among others, Horace Bushnell and N. P. Willis. Mr. Moore graduated in law in Troy, N.Y., and was admitted to the bar but never practiced.

He settled in Springfield in 1849, but held no public office except that of alderman. He was long a director of the John Hancock national Bank of Springfield, and afterwards became its president, which office he held for 27 years. He had a large library and spent much of his time in reading. History was his favorite study. He read Hebrew, Greek and Latin to the end of his life. Considering his studious habits, he was fond of society and was so courteous in manner as to be often referred to, as "a gentleman of the old school."

He kept up a correspondence with Nelson Beardsley, Auburn, N.Y., a classmate, until both men were past 80 years of age. The two men died within a few days of each other. Mr. Moore was an attendant, though not a member, of Christ Church, the first Episcopal Church of Springfield. ⁴

     Sarah Jane Moore was born on 29 July 1842 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ She was the daughter of Roger Sherman Moore and Sarah Ann Root.¹

     Emma Moore was born in 1814.¹ She was the daughter of Roger Moore and Rosetta Hayes. Emma Moore died on 8 April 1831.¹

     Hulda Post was born on 5 April 1749 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 She was the daughter of Joseph Post and Mary (?) Hulda Post married Benajah Holcombe, son of Judah Holcombe and Hannah Buttolph.³

The DAR application of Flora Phelps Gillett cited the History of Norwich, Conn. page 196, by Caulkins, 1866. and listed six children of Benajah and Huldah and also listed Huldah's parents.

     Spear states that Marey was first married to John Fosbush by whom she had a daughter Lydia in 1720. Seaver states that she was the daughter of Jno. and Anna Bancroft Griffin. Bowman thinks he is in error as she is listed in the will of Thomas. Marey Griffin was born on 16 September 1697. She was the daughter of Thomas Griffin and Elizabeth Welton. Marey Griffin married Joshua Holcombe III, son of Ensign Joshua Holcombe and Hannah Carrington, on 28 October 1720 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe was born on 27 January 1726 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ He was the son of Joshua Holcombe III and Marey Griffin.⁵ Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe married Susanna Alderman, daughter of Joseph Alderman and Mindwell Case, on 29 September 1748 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁶ Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe died on 17 July 1794 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 68. He was buried at St. Andrews Episcopal Chruch, Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁷

He was Captain of the 17th Regiment CT Infantry, in the Revolutionary War.Hezekiah Holcombe lived near the crossing of Salmonbrook, Simsbury,Hartford County, Connecticut, October 13, 1751. Served on the school committee, East Granby (Turkey Hills), Conn. December 1765 - December 2, 1766, November 2, 1767 and November 5, 1768. Deputy from Simsbury in 1773, 1783, 1785 and 1787-89. Captain of the 18th Connecticut Regiment, organized there as Capt. Lemuel Bates Company. Commanded the 11th Connecticut Regiment for duty in New York, arriging there August 16,1776. When he was discharged September 25, 1776, Taxpayer there December 2, 1785. On Committee February 23, 1786 proposing an election for separation of Turkey Hills from Simsbury.

DAR application for Mrs. Florence Smith Spencer, #15478, shows descent from Hezekiah and wife Chole Pinney. However, Chloe was Hezekiah's daughter-in-law, wife of Hezekiah II. Mrs. Spencer next shows Luther Holcombe and wife Susanna Holcombe. Susanna was Capt. Hezekiah's second child, but McPherson shows she married only Samuel Forward. There is a Luther Holcombe, son of Asahel that married an untraced Susanna.

In researching Mrs. Spencer's records, Carol Laun cites the Simsbury Vital Records, pages 68, 217, 227; East Granby Vital Records, pages 95, 98, 129; East Granby Church Records, pages 34, 47, 123; the Alderman Genealogy; the Episcopal Church Records, page 57; and "The Report, Oct 1968, OH Genealogical Society" - all viewable at the Salmon Brook Historical Society in Granby of which she is Curator.

     Susanna Alderman was born on 5 September 1723 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Joseph Alderman and Mindwell Case.⁴ Susanna Alderman married Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe, son of Joshua Holcombe III and Marey Griffin, on 29 September 1748 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁵ Susanna Alderman died on 9 October 1814 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 91.³ She was buried at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Hartford Co., CT.³

     Hezekiah Holcombe II was born on 2 September 1750 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^6,7 He was the son of Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe and Susanna Alderman. Hezekiah Holcombe II married Chloe Pinney, daughter of Capt. Abraham Pinney and Elizabeth Butler, on 30 June 1768 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.⁸ Hezekiah Holcombe II married Dorothy Bates, daughter of Capt. Lemuel Bates and Deborah Lewis, on 9 August 1788. Hezekiah Holcombe II died on 8 November 1820 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 70. He was buried at St. Andrews Episcopal Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Hartford Co., CT.⁹

Hezekiah Holcombe's will dated 1814 mentions the "sons of the wife of my youth" Hezekiah, Abraham, Thomas, Joel, Alexander, and 4 daughters, and from 2nd marriage, Daniel Bates and Lemuel Cicero.

     Chloe Pinney was born on 1 June 1750. She was the daughter of Capt. Abraham Pinney and Elizabeth Butler. Chloe Pinney married Hezekiah Holcombe II, son of Capt. Hezekiah Holcombe and Susanna Alderman, on 30 June 1768 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Chloe Pinney died on 10 June 1787 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT, at age 37. She was buried at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Bloomfield, Hartford Co., CT.

     Aurelia Holcombe was born on 23 July 1776 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Hezekiah Holcombe II and Chloe Pinney. Aurelia Holcombe married Grove Catlin Holcombe, son of Benajah Holcombe and Hulda Post, on 10 March 1795.⁴ Aurelia Holcombe died on 23 August 1851 at Vernon, Trumbull Co., OH, at age 75.⁵

Carol Laun: Both Seaver and McPherson had John son of John G. and grandson of Consider Jr. marrying Aurelia, and there are some problems. If John Jr. was born in 1790, Aurelia was 14 years his senior. McPherson has John in East Granby in 1850 while Aurelia was living in Ohio with her children. There is no evidence, other than the two Holcombe genealogies for this marriage between John Holcombe II and Aurelia Holcomb.

     Grove Catlin Holcombe was born on 1 April 1769 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.^6,7,4 He was the son of Benajah Holcombe and Hulda Post.⁷ Grove Catlin Holcombe married Aurelia Holcombe, daughter of Hezekiah Holcombe II and Chloe Pinney, on 10 March 1795.⁸ Grove Catlin Holcombe died on 28 December 1808 at age 39.^9,7

These two Holcombe families married and Seaver gives different accounts of the children on pages 24-25, and 43-44.


The Granby Town Records record that on April 11, 1791 Grove Holcomb took the freemans oath and the Oath of Fidellity. He is listed as a surveyor at a town meeting held on the first Monday in December 1793. At the town meeting held on the first Monday in December 1799 he was listed as a Howard and KeyKeeper.

Most of the children moved with their mother, Aurelia, some being married, from Granby to Vernon, Trumbull Co., Ohio, about 1823. Henry Bingall built a house there for Aurelia, which became a permanent home for her and family.

     Hannah Holcombe was born on 18 February 1771 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Benajah Holcombe and Hulda Post.

     Dorothy Bates Holcombe was born on 16 October 1799 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Grove Catlin Holcombe and Aurelia Holcombe. Dorothy Bates Holcombe married Ralsamond Clark, son of Eber Banning Clark and Wealthy Ann Holcombe, on 15 May 1823 at Vernon, Trumbull Co., OH. Dorothy Bates Holcombe died on 20 September 1886 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, at age 86. She was buried at New Kinsman Cemetery, Kinsman, Trumbull Co., OH.³

Dorathy came from Granby in 1819 with friends who were going to Fairport, Ohio; from there she, accompanied by a boy, rode on horseback to Vernon, Ohio, where she lived with her aunt, Mrs. Sterling (Holcomb) Bushnell. She commenced teaching in the Giddings district and continued until her marriage. Mr. Clark came from Hartland, CT to Vernon, Ohio, with his parents in January, 1814, having passed through Buffalo, N.Y., two weeks after it was burned by the British. His father was a dealer in cattle.

At the time of their marriage, Ralsamond was "Vernon's wealthiest resident." [17] An 1850 map of Trumbull County shows he owned at least eleven pieces of property, some of them sizeable and most concentrated east of Pymatuning Creek along the Kinsman-Orangeville Road. [10] The couple made their home
west of the creek, however, in Vernon Center on what is now # 6099 on Ohio Route 7 in a house that the state's inventory of historic properties lists as still standing.

     Ralsamond Clark was born on 18 December 1796. He was the son of Eber Banning Clark and Wealthy Ann Holcombe. Ralsamond Clark married Dorothy Bates Holcombe, daughter of Grove Catlin Holcombe and Aurelia Holcombe, on 15 May 1823 at Vernon, Trumbull Co., OH. Ralsamond Clark died on 12 December 1882 at Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, at age 85.² He was buried at New Kinsman Cemetery, Kinsman, Trumbull Co., OH.²

     Eber Banning Clark was born on 1 April 1771. He was the son of Elijah Clark and Hannah Banning. Eber Banning Clark married Wealthy Ann Holcombe, daughter of Daniel Holcombe and Hannah Gillett, on 28 March 1796 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Eber Banning Clark died on 31 July 1822 at Vernon, Trumbull Co., OH, at age 51.

     Wealthy Ann Holcombe was born on 9 October 1773 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Daniel Holcombe and Hannah Gillett. Wealthy Ann Holcombe married Eber Banning Clark, son of Elijah Clark and Hannah Banning, on 28 March 1796 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT. Wealthy Ann Holcombe died on 7 January 1861 at Greenville, PA, at age 87. She was buried at Center-Pioneer-Brockway Cemetery, Vernon, Trumbull Co., OH.

Weir has Welthia Ann as a daugher of Dan, Seaver does not mention her parents.

     Drayton Holcombe was born on 30 October 1796 at East Granby, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Grove Catlin Holcombe and Aurelia Holcombe. Drayton Holcombe married Keturah Skinner, daughter of Daniel Skinner and Mary (?), on 17 March 1818. Drayton Holcombe married Julia Ann Beam. Drayton Holcombe died on 24 March 1887 at Welland Co., Ontario, Canada, at age 90.² He was buried at Doane's Ridge Cemetery, Welland Co., Ontario, Canada.

Drayton became a peddler at age 14 years, selling from his wagon, principally clocks, made in Connecticut, and soon visited many states, selling in southern states in winter and, in northern states in summer. Enlisted July 1814 at Granby, Hartford Co., Conn. in U.S. Army and was stationed at New London, New London Co., Conn., and vicinity and was in Staunton, Conn. when it was bombarded by the British. He served until January 1815 when he was honorably discharged. For this service he signed two applications for U.S. pension, the first, Feb 23, 1877 at Pelham, Welland Co., Ontario, Canada, stating his age then as 81 years; the second at Vernon, Trumbull Co., Ohio at age 86 years, he then being a widower. Ralsamon Clark and Silas Phelps both of Vernon, were his character witnesses.

His brother, Grove Catlin Holcombe II in Lafayette Co., Wis. signed Dec. 5, 1872 proof of Drayton's military service in 1814 at age 18 years; of his discharge as above and removal from Granby, Conn. to N. Y. State and later to Canada, where he stayed further stating that Drayton's officers were Capt. Abner Case, Maj. Isaac Pehlps and Gen. Lusk of the Regt. and that Drayton was in one battle.

Soon after marriage Drayton abandoned peddling; invested his earnings in dairy cattle and operated a small dairy for two years until his herd died in a "black hoof" epidemic.

With his wife, one child an donly one horse he moved in March 1819 from Connecticut to Cok's Mill, Crowland Twp., Welland Co., Ontario, Canada, where his wife's brother, Stephen Skinner, and their married sister lived. there he prospered and within a few years owned Cook's Mill and later had some of the best farms in Welland and adjoining counties. He gave to each of his large family of children a substantial property start in life.

He was probably enrolled in the War of 1812 as "Dreton" Holcombe, as his proofs of service recite that he met a man in Buffalo, NY in 1817, who convinced him that his real name was "Drayton", which form he used thereafter.

A rebellion broke out north of Toronto, Canada, in 1839, in which William Lyon MacKenzie was a leader. Samuel Chandler of Pelham was also a leading insurrectionist. One wet, cold mid-night in December, Chandler guiding MacKenzie to the Niagara frontier arrived at Drayton Holdombe's home at Cok's Mill in Welland Co., Ontario for food, warmth and a short sleep. These being hospitably provided, these fugitives resumed their flight before day-break through by-roads and forest paths to McAfee's farm on the Niagara River where MacKenzie crossed to safety in Buffalo, NY. This Chandler was friend of the Holcombe family and their son, Norman Chandler Holcombe had his second Christian name from him. drayton's kindness to MacKenzie and Chandler became a rumor in the Welland area whereupon Drayton considered it prudent to live in Buffalo until the feeling incident to the rebellion subsided. His son, Norman Chandler, made frequent visits to him in Buffalo from his family remaining on his Crowland farm. Later Mackenzie became the first mayor of Toronto, Canada. Canada's premier during the 2nd World War, W.L. MacKenzie, is a descendant of the insurrectionist MacKenzie above.

     Margaret Buck married an unknown person on 6 May 1845. She married Daniel Grove Holcombe, son of Drayton Holcombe and Keturah Skinner, on 6 May 1845. Margaret Buck died in 1890.

     Mary Muffet married an unknown person in 1892. She died in 1918.

     Andrew Thompson Holcombe lived at North Pelham, Welland Co., Canada. He married Lydia Horton, daughter of Zaphaniah Horton and Abigail Thomas. Andrew Thompson Holcombe was born on 13 March 1830. He was the son of Drayton Holcombe and Keturah Skinner.

     Lydia Horton was the daughter of Zaphaniah Horton and Abigail Thomas. Lydia Horton married Andrew Thompson Holcombe, son of Drayton Holcombe and Keturah Skinner.

     Elizabeth was born and raised on the farm in North Pelham; Henry was born in Cooks Mills. He followed the occupation of Farming. They first moved to Essex County, Ontario, the some time after moved to the State of Washington. Elizabeth was in ill health, so she and her daughter came back home to St. Catharines. Elizabeth is buried at the North Pelham Cemetry, on the Holcomb Lot. The farm was on the Pelham Stone Road on top of the Hill west of St. Catharines. Cooks Mills was in Willoughby Township, now Regional Municipality of Niagara. Elizabeth Alfretta Holcombe lived at North Pelham, Welland Co., Ontario, Canada. She was born on 16 June 1854 at North Pelham, Welland Co., Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of Andrew Thompson Holcombe and Lydia Horton. Elizabeth Alfretta Holcombe died on 23 December 1898 at age 44.

     Lydia May Cook lived at St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada. She was born on 24 January 1879. She was the daughter of Henry Cook and Elizabeth Alfretta Holcombe. Lydia May Cook married Edward Albert Smith on 6 March 1907.

     Edward Albert Smith was born on 27 May 1879. He married Lydia May Cook, daughter of Henry Cook and Elizabeth Alfretta Holcombe, on 6 March 1907.

     Valera Smith was the daughter of Edward Albert Smith and Lydia May Cook. Valera Smith died on 3 November 1996.

     Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe was born on 2 February 1857 at Pelham, Niagara Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Andrew Thompson Holcombe and Lydia Horton. Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe married Annie Winn Lackie on 7 July 1880. Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe married Martha M. Chapman. Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe died on 12 December 1917 at Redford, Wayne Co., MI, at age 60. He was buried at Grand Lawn Cemetery, Redford, Wayne Co., MI.

When construction began on Holcomb Elementary School in 1925, it sat within the boundaries of Redford Township. Before it opened in 1926, however, it became part of Detroit Schools.

The school was named for Samuel Drayton Holcomb, who was born in North Pelham, Ontario in 1857. Samuel married Annie Winn Lackie in 1880, and around that same time or shortly after, the couple moved to Michigan. They had one daughter, Ina M., born in 1882. Ina later married into the Houghten family. Annie’s death date is unknown, but it was presumably before 1894, when Samuel married Martha M. Chapman. Martha and Samuel had two sons, Drayton Frazier Holcomb (1895-1965) and Clayton E. Holcomb (1897-1979).

Samuel attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, and Cleveland Medical College, graduating in 1884. He practiced medicine in Southfield and later was one of the first physicians in Redford. His career spanned 38 years.

     Annie Winn Lackie married Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe, son of Andrew Thompson Holcombe and Lydia Horton, on 7 July 1880.

     Martha M. Chapman married Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe, son of Andrew Thompson Holcombe and Lydia Horton.

     Ina M. Holcombe was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Drayton Holcombe and Annie Winn Lackie.
