James R. Holcomb, Sr., 91, of Rocky Hill, CT and formerly of New Britain, CT, passed away peacefully, Saturday (January 19, 2013) at the John L. Levitow Healthcare Facility, located at the State of Connecticut Veterans' Home in Rocky Hill. James was born in Bristol, CT, February 22, 1922 and was the son of the late Samuel and Amy (Gould) Holcomb.
As a young man, he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and worked as a tractor operator to clear fire lines and make truck trails in the State Forests. After the War, James worked as a painter and later for Guida Seibert Dairy until his retirement at age 63. His favorite pastime was golf and making and repairing golf clubs. James was a proud and decorated World War II Veteran, serving in the United States Marine Corps from August 1942 to December 1945. He fought in the Asiatic Pacific at Cape Gloucester, Peleliu and Okinawa. James was also a member of the Hardware City Detachment - Marine Corps League.
James is survived by his son James R. Holcomb, Jr. of Florida, his daughter, Elaine A. Stepensky and her husband Victor of Rocky Hill, CT, his grandchildren, Daphne Jernigan and her husband Anthony, Robbie Holcomb, Lydia Holcomb, Casey Holcomb, Roger Leardi and his wife Nancy, Thomas Leardi and his wife Shannon, Lynn Lockwood and her husband Shawn, his twelve great grandchildren, his three sisters-in-law, Connie Madey, Marrianne Madey and Madeline Kinney and many nieces and nephews. In addition, James was blessed with loving step-grandchildren and their extended families: Kathy Karalus, Anthony and Holly Stepensky and Mary Ann and Peter Moneta. James was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Theresa (Madey) Holcomb, his brother, William G. Holcomb, his sister-in-law Katherine Holcomb, his three brothers-in-law William and Robert Madey and Patrick Kinney.
Calling hours for Mr. Holcomb will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the Paul A. Shaker / Farmingdale Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Avenue, New Britain, CT from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Directions to funeral home: I-84 East or West - Exit 37 (Fienemann Road) right off exit - one mile down on right. The Hardware City Detachment - Marine Corps League will hold a service Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 10 a.m. with full military honors at St. Joseph Cemetery, Farmington Avenue, Plainville, CT.
