Merit Pliney Alderman1

Merit Pliney Alderman was born on 29 July 1858.1 He was the son of Charles Wesley Alderman and Hannah F. Fitzgerald.1 Merit Pliney Alderman died on 16 January 1928 at age 69.1
Early in life Merit moved to Gloucester, MA, and it was there that he found his wife. they were Protestants and at least one of the children was an Episcopalian. In the early 1890's he became identified with the militia by joining Co. G. of the Eighth Massachusetts Regiment under Capt. William A. Pew, who later rose to the rank of Brigadier General. His regimetn was in teh Spanish-American War. By 1903 Pliney had risen to the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant and continued his membership in Co. G. until it was called into service during World War I. When the State Guard was formed he became armorer for the two companies in his community, due to his knowledge of military law and procedure. He was familiarly known as "Sergeant Alderman" and was highly respected. He was greatly interested in genealogy and spent much time and effort in collecting family statistics.2
