     Rebecca North was born in 1693 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT. She married Joseph Phelps, son of Joseph Phelps and Mary Collier, on 7 January 1713/14 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Rebecca North died on 3 November 1732 at Turkey Hills, Hartford Co., CT.

     Elizabeth Phelps was born on 27 November 1726 at Turkey Hills, Hartford Co., CT.² She was the daughter of Joseph Phelps and Rebecca North. Elizabeth Phelps married Moses Holcombe, son of Thomas Holcombe and Mary Manning.³

     Ichabod Miller was born on 25 March 1704 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ He married Hannah Van Horn on 25 September 1731 at Springfield, Hampden Co., MA.¹ Ichabod Miller married Mary Phelps on 27 December 1737 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Ichabod Miller married Sarah Holcombe, daughter of Ensign John Holcombe and Ann Pettibone, on 27 January 1741.² Ichabod Miller married Sarah Holcombe, daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Mary Manning, in 1741. Ichabod Miller died in 1793 at West Granby, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.¹

This Ichabod must not be confused with the Ichabod Miller of Granville, MA, and Middletown, CT, who had sons named Recompense, Timothy, and Ichabod. ¹


A child called Icahbod Miller was born to one Hannah Enos of Simsbury in 1741, and possibly Ichabod was the father, since it was the custom to give an illegitimate boy the name of his natural father. ¹

     Simeon Ward married Sarah Holcombe, daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Mary Manning, in 1752.

     Jay Cook Goddard was born on 27 February 1866 at Unionville, OH.¹ He was the son of Erastus Clifton Goddard and Nancie E. Cook.¹ Jay Cook Goddard married Laura Cowdery, daughter of Lyman Hervey Cowdery and Sarah H. Holmes, on 4 July 1888 at Perry, Lake Co., OH.¹ Jay Cook Goddard died on 3 June 1947 at Unionville, OH, at age 81.¹

     James Thompson was born on 29 January 1710/11 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 He was the son of John Thompson Jr. and Margaret Orton.^3,4 James Thompson married Mary Judson on 12 April 1739.¹ James Thompson married Martha Holcombe, daughter of Ensign John Holcombe and Ann Pettibone, on 19 November 1741.⁵ James Thompson died on 16 December 1785 at age 74.⁶

     Elizabeth Holcombe was the daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Mary Manning.

     Mary Holcombe was the daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Ridout. Mary Holcombe married William Hayes II. Mary Holcombe died on 27 March 1760.²

Mary and William had children mentioned in her father Thomas' 1770 will.

In an unpublished manuscript in January 2010 Carol Laun writes:

Mary m. William Hayes 2^nd born 5 Apr 1725 s/o William and Joanna (Lee) Hays. Mary died 27 Mar 1760 and William married Rachel Lewis 15 Jan 1761. (Hayes Genealogy) Mary and William had heirs mentioned in her father’s will. They may be Ruth w/o Michael Hays and Martha Gossard w/o ____ Gossard. See the following deed.

The Hayes Genealogy said William 2^nd had at least 9 children and lists William, Jeremiah, Luke, Apphia, Ozias, Eli, Joanna, Ahas and an infant who died young. All of these may be from the second marriage.

     William Hayes II was born on 5 April 1725.¹ He married Mary Holcombe, daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Ridout.

     Sybil Holcombe was the daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Ridout. Sybil Holcombe married Isaac Moore, son of William Moore and Elizabeth Case.

In an unpublished manuscript from January 2010 Carol Laun writes:

Sybil m. Isaac Moore, the son of William and Elizabeth (Case) Moore, according to both the Moore and Holcomb genealogies. They have very few vital records naming their children:
Hulda d/o Isaac Moore b. 5 Aug 1745 (SVR-70) and died 6 May 1770, age 24 (SVR-213)
Isaac Moore Jr. died and his estate went through probate in 1777.

The Moore Genealogy has Isaac die 26 Sept 1776 in the Revolutionary War, but it was his son Isaac Jr. who died then as proved by Probate Records. The genealogy lists five children:

Isaac served in the French-Indian War, Col. Eliphalet Dyer's Regt. Isaac Terry Holcombe was born in 1736. He was the son of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Ridout. Isaac Terry Holcombe died on 4 April 1762 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Damarius Holcombe was the daughter of Thomas Holcombe and Sarah Ridout. Damarius Holcombe married Daniel Gaines, son of Daniel Gaines and Eunice Gillet, on 25 August 1756.² Damarius Holcombe died before 20 April 1797.

There are duplicate Damaris (Damarius) Holcombe entries. Bowman continues the line here under Thomas Holcombe III. Bowman states that Seaver is in error because the heirs of Damarius were mentioned in their grandfather, Thomas' 1770 will. The children are listed in Weir.

An article in NEHGR, Vol 85, Jan 1931, on Henry Gaines, pages 30-56, explains:

"The Simsbury Vital Records contain the following: 'William Gaines and Damaris Holcomb, both of Simsbury, married Aug 25, 1756.' Unless there were two women at Simsbury named Damaris Holcomb, both of marriageable age, this record is in error as to the name of the bridegroom. No second Damaris appears in the record.

The will of Thomas Holcombe of Simsbury, dated 15 Sep 1770, mentions his wife Christian and his daughters Sarah, Damaris, Mary, and Sibel.

From NEHGR:

Daniel Gaines resided in that part of Simsbury which became Granby in 1786 and in 1804, by adjustment of the State boundary, a part of Southwick, Mass. His farm lay west of the Congomond Ponds, through which the new boundary ran; and it is probable that he lived on this farm during his life as a farmer. On 12 Apr. 1793 he conveyed to Uriel Case of Simsbury all such title as he had in a Gillett lot, so called, "which fell to me by heirship from my honored grandfather, William Gillett or my mother Eunice, both since deceased," ten acres. On 29 Apr. 1797 Daniel Ganies, Jr., Samuel and Damaris Warner, Euinice, Lydia, Lois, and Lucretia Gaines, all of Granby, conveyed to Capt. Seth Case and others one-half of the lot in Simsbury which their honored grandfather, Thomas Holcomb, late of Simsbury, deceased, gave to their mother, Damaris Gaines, deceased, by his last will, and which decended to them by heirship from their said mother, forty-five acres. On 24 Apr. 1804 Daniel Gaines , Sr., of Southwick, Mass., conveyed to Jonathan Eno of Simsbury "my right in 14 acres of land in Simsbury which fell to me by heirship from my honored uncle John Saxton, late of Simsbury."

"On 9 Apr. 1801 Daniel Gaines of Granby, Hartford Co., Conn., made his will, the original of which is on file at Northampton, Mass., and gave his real estate to his son Daniel and £50 to each of his five daughters. In the probate proceedings the testator is called Daniel Gaines of Southwick, formerly of Granby. The inventory of the estate was taken on 1 or 2 Apr. 1811 (or 1812)."


Three Thomas Holcombs

In an unpublished January 2010 manuscript Carol Laun writes:

Damaris m. 25 Aug 1756 William Gaines (SVR-161) but this is evidently an error in the vital records. There is proof that she married Daniel Gaines in an article called Descendants of Henry Gaines of Lynn, MA published in the NEHGR in Jan 1931. Land records dated 29 Apr 1797 show “Daniel Gaines Jr., Samuel and Damaris Warner, Eunice, Lydia, Lois and Lucretia Gaines, all of Granby, sold land which their honored grandfather, Thomas Holcomb gave to their mother Damaris Gaines, deceased.”.

     Seaver and Bowman disagree on Daniel. Bowman shows two Daniels, one that died young and one that marreid Sarah Holcomb. Daniel Holcombe was born on 31 March 1744 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ He was the son of Daniel Holcombe and Hesther Buell. Daniel Holcombe died young.

     Gaylor Holcombe was the son of Daniel Holcombe and Hesther Buell.

     Phoebe Holcombe was the daughter of Isaac Holcombe and Phoebe Cornish.

Carol Laun did substantial research on Phoebe and found that the Phoebe that married Capt. Charles Case Sr. was in fact Phebe Griswold. ²

     Died unmarried. Stiles says that Martha movet to Suffield CT with her only daughter Elizabeth in 1717, so Martha must have died prior to then. Martha Stiles was born on 1 April 1702. She was the daughter of Samuel Stiles and Martha Ellsworth.

     Sergeant Henry Stiles was born circa 1629 at England. He was the son of John Stiles and Rachel (?) Sergeant Henry Stiles married Elizabeth Willcockson, daughter of William Willcockson and Margaret (?), on 16 April 1663 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3

     Elizabeth Willcockson was born circa 1642.¹ She was the daughter of William Willcockson and Margaret (?)¹ Elizabeth Willcockson married Sergeant Henry Stiles, son of John Stiles and Rachel (?), on 16 April 1663 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2 Elizabeth Willcockson died after 22 October 1668.¹

     Lt. Samuel Stiles was born on 15 January 1705/6. He was the son of Samuel Stiles and Martha Ellsworth. Lt. Samuel Stiles married Mary Phelps, daughter of Capt. Josiah Phelps and Sarah Winchell, in February 1729.

Bowman states, Volume I, Page 83, that Lt. Samuel Stiles married Mary Phelps, dautghter of Benjamin Phelps and Hannah Birge.

Stiles, Volume II, Page 566, Family 9, says Mary, daughter of Josias Phelps and Sarah Winchell, married Samuel Stiles.

Stiles, Volume II, Page 704, Famly 8, says Samuel Stiles married Mary Phelps without mentioning her parents.

     Elizabeth Stiles was born on 14 October 1708 or 14 October 1709. She was the daughter of Samuel Stiles and Martha Ellsworth. Elizabeth Stiles married Daniel Spencer in 1726.

     John Stiles was born at England. He was baptized on 25 December 1595. He died on 4 June 1662 or 1663.

     John Stiles was born in 1633 at England. He was the son of John Stiles and Rachel (?) John Stiles married Dorcas Burt on 28 August 1658. John Stiles died on 8 December 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.

     Isaac Stiles was born at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of John Stiles and Rachel (?)

     Sarah Stiles was born at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of John Stiles and Rachel (?)

     Mary Phelps was born on 18 August 1702 at Poquonock, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Capt. Josiah Phelps and Sarah Winchell. Mary Phelps married Lt. Samuel Stiles, son of Samuel Stiles and Martha Ellsworth, in February 1729. Mary Phelps died on 6 October 1799 at age 97.

     Capt. Josiah Phelps was born on 16 December 1667 at Poquonock, Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Samuel Phelps and Sarah Griswold. Capt. Josiah Phelps married Sarah Winchell, daughter of Nathaniel Winchell and Sarah Porter, on 26 April 1690.² Capt. Josiah Phelps died in 1757.

     Sarah Winchell was born on 26 December 1674 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Winchell and Sarah Porter. Sarah Winchell married Capt. Josiah Phelps, son of Samuel Phelps and Sarah Griswold, on 26 April 1690.¹ Sarah Winchell died on 4 May 1733 at Poquenock, CT, at age 58.

     Bowman notes that Daniel is the son of Samuel, grandson of Thomas Spencer. Daniel Spencer married Elizabeth Stiles, daughter of Samuel Stiles and Martha Ellsworth, in 1726. Daniel Spencer died in 1772.

     Thomas Gridley Jr. was born on 1 August 1650.² He was the son of Thomas Gridley and Mary Seymour.² Thomas Gridley Jr. married Elizabeth Clark, daughter of Sergt. John Clark and Rebecca Marvin, on 25 December 1679 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.^3,2 Thomas Gridley Jr. died in 1742.²

     Elizabeth Clark was born circa 1663.¹ She was the daughter of Sergt. John Clark and Rebecca Marvin.¹ Elizabeth Clark married Thomas Gridley Jr., son of Thomas Gridley and Mary Seymour, on 25 December 1679 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.^2,1 Elizabeth Clark died in April 1696 at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.^3,1

     Moses Ellsworth was born in 1730 at PA. He was the son of Josiah Ellsworth and Margaret (?) Moses Ellsworth married Anna Henckel.

     James Ellsworth was the son of Josiah Ellsworth and Margaret (?)

     Rebecca Ellsworth was the daughter of Josiah Ellsworth and Margaret (?)

     Abigal Stephens was born in 1718. She was the daughter of John Stephens and Abigal Ellsworth.

     Silvanus Stephens was born in 1726. He was the son of John Stephens and Abigal Ellsworth.

     John Allen was born on 30 September 1670 at Northampton, MA. He was the son of John Allen and Mary Hannum. John Allen married Bridget Booth on 3 May 1694.

     Bridget Booth married John Allen, son of John Allen and Mary Hannum, on 3 May 1694.

     Bowman also cites the Ellsworth Genealogy. Samuel Ellsworth II was born on 1 October 1718 at Ellington, CT. He was the son of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen. Samuel Ellsworth II married Amee Holiday, daughter of William Holiday and Anna Ellis, on 2 December 1746 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Samuel Ellsworth II died in 1803 at Arlington, Bennington Co., VT.

     Charles Ellsworth was born on 12 December 1721 at East Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen. Charles Ellsworth died in 1806.

Charles commanded a company at the Lexington Alarm from East Windsor.

     The family moved to Vermont and Fort Covington, NY. Elijah Ellsworth was born in 1724. He was the son of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen. Elijah Ellsworth married Susanna Porter, daughter of Lt. James Porter and Elizabeth (?), in 1775 at NH.

     Josiah Ellsworth was born in 1726. He was the son of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen. Josiah Ellsworth died in 1815.

     Eliphalet Ellsworth was born on 23 July 1740. Eliphalet Ellsworth was the child of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen.

     Elizabeth Ellsworth was the daughter of Samuel Ellsworth and Elizabeth Allen.
