     McPherson gives Waitstill's last name as FISH. Cynthia Holcombe was born on 7 May 1770 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith. Cynthia Holcombe married Waitstill Crumb, son of Waitstill Crumb and Patience Wells. Cynthia Holcombe died in 1830.

     Died young. Sybil Holcombe died young. She was born on 8 March 1772 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith.

     Samuel lmoved with his father and grandfather from Granby, Ct. to Stephenton, N.Y., where he was a farmer.

McPherson doesn't mention the second wife, Sarah Squire. Samuel Holcombe married Sarah Squire. Samuel Holcombe was born on 11 July 1773 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ He was the son of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith. Samuel Holcombe married Clarissa Sabrina Adams on 5 February 1795. Samuel Holcombe died on 28 December 1814 at Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., NY, at age 41.

     Josiah Holcombe was born on 20 November 1774 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith. Josiah Holcombe married Penelope Griffin. Josiah Holcombe died in 1817 at NY.

Twin. He does not appear in the 1820 Census, but Penelope is listed as head of household at Nassau, NY near her father-in-law.

The family of Johan is primarily constructed from census records. The strong evidence that he was the father of Harriet, wife of Henry L. Andrews, is based on consistency of dates and places, and the death certificate for Harriet naming her parents as Johan and Sabra. Jonah is given in the following Census records of NY: 1810 Onondaga Co., 1820 Genesee Co., and 1830 Genesse Co. From these records, Jonah was born 1770-1775, the other males were born 1794-1802, 1794-1802, 1802-1804, and 1804-1810, Jonah's wife was born 1775-1780, and the other females were born 1800-1810, 1804-1810, 1810-1820, and 1820-1825. Jonah lived at Orangeville, Genesse (later Wyoming) Co., NY in 1820 and 1830. The family of Harriet (Holcomb) Andrews lived at Johnsonburg, in the Town of Orangeville. Married about 1798. A letter dated Jan 10, 1831, written by his brother-in-law Chauncey Rowe (married to Olive Holcombe) reports that "Jonah Holcomb, last fall, was dying from consumption and there is no probability of his being now alive."

Jonah's widow was probably living with his son Chauncey at the time of the 1840 Census, and age 60-70. Jonah Holcombe was born on 20 November 1774 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith. Jonah Holcombe died by 1831 at probably Wyoming Co., NY.

     Moved to Georgia. Justus Holcombe was born on 7 August 1776 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ He was the son of Josiah Holcombe Jr. and Dorcas Smith.

     Margaret Case was born circa 1713 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Capt. Richard Case and Amy Reed. Margaret Case married Jacob Holcombe, son of Sgt. Jonathan Holcombe and Mary Buell, on 10 February 1736/37 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ Margaret Case married Lt. Peter Holcombe, son of Lt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Martha Buell, on 15 October 1740.^5,6 Margaret Case died on 14 October 1750 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.⁷

     Capt. Richard Case was born on 27 April 1669 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² He was the son of John Case and Sarah Spencer. Capt. Richard Case married Amy Reed, daughter of Dr. Phillip Reed and Abigail Rice, on 1 September 1701 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ Capt. Richard Case died on 27 April 1746 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 77.

Richard was a member of the General Court, appointed Ensign in May 1710, Lieutenant 12 May 1715 and Captain in 1716.

     Amy Reed was born on 3 March 1678/79.¹ She was the daughter of Dr. Phillip Reed and Abigail Rice. Amy Reed married Capt. Richard Case, son of John Case and Sarah Spencer, on 1 September 1701 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Mary Buell was born on 23 December 1677 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3 She was the daughter of Sgt. Peter Buell and Martha Cogan. Mary Buell married Sgt. Jonathan Holcombe, son of Nathaniel Holcombe and Mary Bliss, on 1 November 1695 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^4,3 Mary Buell died on 21 June 1720 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 42.⁵

     Samuel Buell was born on 2 September 1641 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.³ He was the son of William Buell and Mary Post.⁴ Samuel Buell married Deborah Griswold, daughter of Edward Griswold and Margaret (?), on 13 November 1662 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.⁵ Samuel Buell died on 11 July 1720 at Killingworth, New London (now Middlesex) Co., CT, at age 78.³

McCracken cites Winthrop's medical journal that shows Samuel aged 16 in 1657.

Samuel moved to Killingworth, CT, in 1667 with his father-in-law to the part now Clinton.

Stiles listed a last child "Samuel" of Samuel and Deborah without further information. As the first child Samuel survived, it is unlikely that there was another.

     Mary Buell was born on 3 September 1642 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² She was the daughter of William Buell and Mary Post.³ Mary Buell married Simon Mills, son of Simon Mills, on 23 February 1659/60 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² Mary Buell married Samuel Bissell, son of Capt. John Bissell and Mary Drake. Mary Buell died on 24 June 1718 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 75.²

McCracken cites Winthrop's medical journal showing Mary aged 18 in 1659 and 27 in 1668.

     Hannah Buell was born on 8 January 1646/47 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3 She was the daughter of William Buell and Mary Post.⁴ Hannah Buell married Timothy Palmer, son of Nicholas Palmer, on 17 September 1663 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.^5,3 Hannah Buell died on 26 September 1704 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT, at age 57.³

     Hepzibah Buell was born on 11 December 1649 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of William Buell and Mary Post.² Hepzibah Buell married Lt. Thomas Wells, son of Thomas Wells, on 12 January 1672/73 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.³ Hepzibah Buell married Daniel Belden on 17 February 1698/99 at Deerfield, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., MA.³ Hepzibah Buell died in March 1704 at age 54.⁴

Thomas and Hebzibah had eight children. On June 6, 1693, Hepzibah and two of her children were tomahawked by Indians and the family was broken up. Hepzibah was taken prisoner when the town of Deerfield was sacked in 1704 and was killed on the march to Canada.

McCracken Albert Welles says hepzibah's death occurred in March 1704; Stiles has 29 Feb. 1704, which, if right, would have to be 29 Feb. 1703/4. mrs Parsons agrees with Stiles and syas that Hepzibah was captured by the Indians and was taken captive, dying on the journey to Canada. The late Dr. Robert R. Buell, however, informed me that Hepzibah died in 1734, having survived her second husband. This would be, of course, quite impossible if he married, third, Sarah (Hawks) mattoon on some unknown date, and the date of Sarah's death recorded at Hadley is right.

     Sarah Buell was born on 21 November 1653 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² She was the daughter of William Buell and Mary Post.³ Sarah Buell died before 2 September 1684.²

Living 11 June 1676 when she contributed a silver shilling to the war sufferers; not living 29 Aug. 1684 when mentioned, but obviously then dead, in the will of her mother. Albert Welles wrongly says she d. unm., in 1734. She d. unm. but fifty years before that and it was her sister Hepzibah who d. 1734.

     Abigail Buell was born on 12 February 1655/56 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.² She was the daughter of William Buell and Mary Post.³ Abigail Buell died before 29 August 1684.²

Died certainly before the date of her mother's will (29 Aug. 1684), and possibly even before that of her father's will (26 July 1681), as he does not mention any living daughter except Mary. Albert Welles says she d. 16 Nov. 1681, which is the date of her father's death, and Mr. Starr was unable to find any record of such a date in connection with her.²

     Simon Mills was born circa 1613 at England.¹ He was the son of Simon Mills. Simon Mills married Mary Buell, daughter of William Buell and Mary Post, on 23 February 1659/60 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.¹ Simon Mills died on 8 June 1683 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹

McCracken Simon, a baker, may have been the Symon who was baptized 25 April 1613 in the parish church of Barnstaple, Devon, as fouirth child of John Mill by hi swife Wilmott Frenshe, who wre married there 28 Aug. 1606, as shown by Miss Eunice M. Lamb. the date of the marriage of Simon Mills to Mry Buell is recorded at Windsor as 23 Feb. 1659/60, which is probably correct, as the births begin about a year afterwards, but for some reason not explained, Mattehw Grant enters the date as 23 Feb. 1656 (i.e. 1656/7). simon Mills had married his first wife Joan, maden name not discovered, on 11 Oct. 1639 and she died at Windsor on 5 July 1659, without having given birth to any child, so that Simon was free to marry a second wife on the date given above.

Simon mills died intestate, but his estate was not finally settled until 1719 after the death of his widow (Manwaring 1:335 f.)

     Samuel Mills was born on 23 April 1661 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Samuel Mills died on 19 May 1661 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.

     Probably died at birth. Simon Mills was born on 21 January 1662 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Simon Mills and Mary Buell.

     Mary Mills was born on 8 December 1662 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Mary Mills married Lt. Samuel Humphrey, son of Michael Humphrey and Priscilla Grant, in 1680. Mary Mills died on 4 April 1730 at probably Simsbury, CT, at age 67.

     Hannah Mills was born in 1665 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Hannah Mills married Simon Drake, son of John Drake and Hannah Moore, on 15 December 1687. Hannah Mills married Sgt. Daniel Loomis, son of Deacon John Loomis and Elizabeth Scott, on 9 July 1713. Hannah Mills died after 5 May 1721.

     Simon Mills was born on 1 May 1667 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Simon Mills died before 1678.

     John Mills was born on 23 June 1668 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. John Mills married Sarah Pettibone, daughter of John Pettibone Sr. and Sarah Eggleston, in 1689. John Mills died on 11 March 1698 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 29.

He lived on Little Philip Mountain above Weatogue Houses and despite his early death left six children.

     Sarah Mills was born on 16 September 1670 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Sarah Mills married Thomas Ellsworth, son of Sgt. Josiah Ellsworth and Elizabeth Holcombe, on 24 July 1691. Sarah Mills died before 9 April 1718.

     Abigail Mills was born in 1672 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Abigail Mills died before 24 July 1691.

     Elizabeth Mills was born in 1674 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Elizabeth Mills married Thomas Hoskins, son of Anthony Hoskins and Isabel Brown, on 23 February 1698 or 1699. Elizabeth Mills died after 26 March 1719.

     Prudence Mills was born in 1676 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Prudence Mills died before 6 September 1683.

     McCracken also cites the Simsbury Land Records 8:369; and does not know why this Simon, the third of this name among the children, was omitted from one of the distributions. Simon Mills was born in 1678 at Windsor. He was the son of Simon Mills and Mary Buell. Simon Mills was baptized on 11 May 1679 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. He married Mary Gaylord on 19 December 1717 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Simon Mills died after 8 March 1760.

     Deborah Griswold was baptized on 28 June 1646 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.³ She was the daughter of Edward Griswold and Margaret (?) Deborah Griswold married Samuel Buell, son of William Buell and Mary Post, on 13 November 1662 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ Deborah Griswold died on 7 February 1717/18 at Killingworth, New London (now Middlesex) Co., CT, at age 71.⁵

     Thankful Hayes was born circa 1700 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She was the daughter of George Hayes and Abigail Dibble. Thankful Hayes married Capt. Nathaniel Holcombe, son of Lt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Martha Buell, on 9 October 1717 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2,3 Thankful Hayes died on 15 May 1771 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^4,2

     George Hayes was born on 23 September 1655 at Scotland. He married Sarah (?) at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. George Hayes married Abigail Dibble, daughter of Samuel Dibble and Abigail Graves, on 29 August 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. George Hayes died on 2 September 1725 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 69.³

     Abigail Dibble was born on 19 January 1666/67 at Stamford, Fairfield Co., CT; recorded in Windsor.^1,2 She was the daughter of Samuel Dibble and Abigail Graves. Abigail Dibble married George Hayes on 29 August 1683 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. Abigail Dibble died after 1725 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.

     Hannah Holcombe was born on 2 May 1718 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^6,7 She was the daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Thankful Hayes.⁴ Hannah Holcombe married John Reade, son of Dr. Jacob Reade and Elizabeth Law, on 17 February 1736/37 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^8,4 Hannah Holcombe died on 27 March 1756 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 37.⁹

McCracken notes (TAG 1981) that spouse is John Reade, not John Reuel as stated in the Hayes Genealogy (also Reuel in McPherson). Bowman spells it Read in one place, Reed in another.

There is confusion about the Hannah that married John Read (Reed, Reade). In NEHGS, April 1958, McCracken lists her as the daughter of Joshua and Mary (Hoskins) Holcombe.

     John Reade was also known as John Reed. John Reade was also known as John Read. He was born on 20 June 1708 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He was the son of Dr. Jacob Reade and Elizabeth Law. John Reade married Hannah Holcombe, daughter of Capt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Thankful Hayes, on 17 February 1736/37 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^2,3

     Dr. Jacob Reade was also known as Dr. Jacob Read. Dr. Jacob Reade was also known as Dr. Jacob Reed. He was born on 30 March 1673 at Concord, Middlesex Co., MA. He was the son of Dr. Phillip Reed and Abigail Rice. Dr. Jacob Reade died on 3 December 1709 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 36.

     Dr. Philip Reade was born on 13 May 1671 at Concord, Middlesex Co., MA. He was the son of Dr. Phillip Reed and Abigail Rice.

     Nathaniel Holcombe IV was born on 1 February 1719/20 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^6,7 He was the son of Capt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Thankful Hayes. Nathaniel Holcombe IV married Margaret Cossett, daughter of Raney Cossett, on 20 March 1740 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^8,5

Bowman lists Margaret as the wife married in 1740 but mentions that Spear lists the wife married in 1740 as Hannah Holcomb, but McCracken notes that Nathaniel's 1st child and son Nathaniel, married Hannah Holcombe in 1760. Bowman also assigns the 1760 marriage of Hannah Holcombe to 1st son Nathaniel. Seaver is then incorrect in making Hannah the second wife of this Nathaniel. McPherson also incorrectly shows Hannah as second wife, but also shows Hannah as the wife of Nathaniel V.

     Margaret Cossett was born in 1719. She was the daughter of Raney Cossett. Margaret Cossett married Nathaniel Holcombe IV, son of Capt. Nathaniel Holcombe and Thankful Hayes, on 20 March 1740 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^1,2

     Nathaniel Holcombe V was born on 10 November 1740 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ He was the son of Nathaniel Holcombe IV and Margaret Cossett. Nathaniel Holcombe V married Hannah Holcombe, daughter of Deacon Azariah Holcombe and Hannah Loomis, on 16 April 1760 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁵ Nathaniel Holcombe V married Jemima Atkins in 1780.⁶ Nathaniel Holcombe V died on 9 September 1812 at North Guilford, CT, at age 71.⁷

There is much confusion over the wives and children of Nathaniel IV, V, and VI.

     Deacon Azariah Holcombe was born on 22 February 1707/8 at Granby, Hartford Co., CT.⁴ He was the son of Sgt. Jonathan Holcombe and Mary Buell. Deacon Azariah Holcombe was baptized on 13 June 1708 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁵ He married Hannah Loomis, daughter of Philip Loomis and Hannah (?), on 25 June 1730 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.⁶ Deacon Azariah Holcombe died in December 1771 at age 63.⁷

     Hannah Holcombe was born on 19 January 1738/39 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Deacon Azariah Holcombe and Hannah Loomis. Hannah Holcombe married Nathaniel Holcombe V, son of Nathaniel Holcombe IV and Margaret Cossett, on 16 April 1760 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.²

     Nathaniel Holcombe VI was born on 15 February 1761 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^4,5 He was the son of Nathaniel Holcombe V and Hannah Holcombe. Nathaniel Holcombe VI lived at Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY. He died in 1813 at Ste. Genevieve, Ste. Genevieve Co., MO.

McPherson shows no children, Seaver shows Geneva and Medad.

     Hannah Holcombe was born on 20 October 1763 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.^3,4 She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe V and Hannah Holcombe. Hannah Holcombe was baptized on 15 April 1764.

Hannah and Smith took Margaret when 6 years old to fish Creek, NY, 90 miles from Granville, MA, and she never saw her father again, who died at the home of her half-brother, Medad, in NY. Later Hannah and her husband moved to Ft. Stanwix on the Mohawk River 75 miles from Canada and by about 180_ removed to Natchez, Miss. Ter. She died in the Spanish settlements west of the Mississippi River. No children^5.

     Bathsheba Holcombe was also known as Bethia Holcombe. She was born on 9 December 1767 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.¹ She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe V and Hannah Holcombe.

Baptism is recorded as 5 April 1767 by Roger Viets, but perhaps Bathsheba and Bethia are different people, since unless one of the dates is wrong, the baptism precedes the birth. Even the fathers may not be identical.

     Zebiah Holcombe was born on 8 April 1770 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ Her baptism name was Zerviah Holcombe.⁴ She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe V and Hannah Holcombe.

Seaver spells this name Lebiah.

Zebiah married and lived in NY. She was old enough at her mother, Hannah's death, to remember her and before 1820 told her sister, Margaret, much of their mother.⁵

     Bildad Holcombe was the son of Nathaniel Holcombe V and Hannah Holcombe. Bildad Holcombe was also known as William Bildad Holcombe.² He was baptized on 3 October 1773; by Roger Viets.³

Lived near Schenectady, NY.⁴

     Hulda Holcombe was born on 24 January 1742/43 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.² She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe IV and Margaret Cossett. Hulda Holcombe married Simeon Holcombe, son of Lt. David Holcombe and Mehitable Buttolph, on 8 May 1760 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT.³ Hulda Holcombe died on 19 May 1798 at age 55.⁴

McCracken suggests she may have married in Windsor-Bloomfield on 29 Dec 1777, Simon Holcombe (David, Nathaniel, Nathaniel, Thomas). Bowman accepts this marriage. See Bowman, Vol I, pgs 150 and 154 for a discussion of Hulda's possible mother.

Burials in the Granby Center Cemetery shows her as a daughter of Nathaniel and Hannah (Holcombe) Holcombe.

     There is some confusion. There is a tombstone in the Granby Center Cemetery for a Zacheus Holcomb 14 Jan 1744 - 19 July 1762 from Carol Laun Granby Center Cemetery, s/o Nathaniel and Margrit Cossitt Holcomb. It is very possible that Nathaniel IV had a son Zaccheus born 1744 died 1762 and that Nathaniel V had a son Zaccheus born 1762 and living in 1790 or in fact Nathaniel and Margrit had two sons, both named Zaccheus since the first died before the second was born.

Seaver shows the Zaccheus born in 1762, died about 1812.

Zaccheus enlisted Sept 24, 1779 in Capt. Thaddeum Weed's 5th Conn Regt. He is recorded with family in the 1790 census of Sandersfield, Berkshire Co., MA. Zaccheus Holcombe was born on 14 January 1744/45.³ He was the son of Nathaniel Holcombe IV and Margaret Cossett. Zaccheus Holcombe died on 19 July 1762 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 17.^4,5

     Ruth Holcombe was born on 18 November 1748. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe IV and Margaret Cossett. Ruth Holcombe married James Hillyer IV, son of Capt. James Hillyer and Mary Eno Humphrey, on 2 February 1769 at St. Ann's Episcopal Chruch, Granby, Hartford Co., CT.²
